5 Practical Ways to Build a Christian Home

Are you looking for some practical ways to build a Christian home? We may not be able to see God but we want to invite Him into our dwelling. Here are some ideas to get you started!

We know our Mighty Lord is always with us. We read it in scripture and hear it all the time. But let’s be real.

Motherhood is crazy and sometimes in the chaos we forget to seek God.

It’s not because we are bad Christians or are purposely leaving God out. It happens because our focus ends up on kids and laundry and meals. But you know what? These are all activities that God can be apart of…if we intentionally have brought Him into the rooms of our house!

In all the chaos and mess, we need to pause and ask our Great Provider to be present with us. That’s what Christian homemaking is all about.

Let’s take Joshua 24:15 to the next level and build Christian homes to raise our families in!

Building a Christian home

Why We Need to Build a Christian Home

Sometimes we forget how important our physical space is when raising children. I’m not talking about how clean it is or if you have the latest aesthetic in your home. I’m talking about whether or not your family (and guests) can find God within your walls!

Now I’m not saying you have to plaster your house with God-themed decor. Don’t go out and commission stained glass windows with illustrations of scripture. Or paint murals on all your walls…unless that is your decor style!

But God can still be a significant presence in your space without overwhelming everyone.

When we see God in our living areas, it reminds us to lean into Him. It turns our focus to Him and helps us take a breath in those overwhelming moments. Then we are more likely to handle our emotions better and offer grace to our families in those trying moments.

If the physical space is inviting for Him, we will be more likely to see Him in it. So what are some ways we can build a home that glorifies God?

Write Down What You Want Your House to Look Like

This is not a vision board or a Pinterest board full of perfect living rooms. This is where you get down to the nitty-gritty and consider what a house that is full of Jesus is going to be.

What will it look like? What will it sound like? How will you intentionally invite God to be present?

Take a few minutes to write down some ideas so you can start envisioning what a Christian home looks like!

5 Practical Ways to Build a Christian Home - Intentionally invite God into your space to be reminded of His presence!

1. Christian Decor

You don’t have to be an interior decorator to add Christian touches to your home. You don’t even have to leave your living room! You can check out Etsy for great digital downloads that you can print yourself. Then grab a frame and bam you have some new Christian decor prints for your living room!

I also love using scripture cards around my home. I have them in my kitchen window, on my fridge, on my night side table and in my living room.

I like them because they can be changed regularly. And when they are in places I look (like my kitchen window) I am constantly reminded of God’s word.

Choose things that fit your style and your budget. Find things that can be a reminder of God’s faithfulness so you can look at them and feel His presence in the room!

2. Biblical Books and Magazines

This seems obvious but sometimes we forget that when things are easy to access, we are more likely to use them! Having Christian books and magazines lying around brings God into what you read. If it’s sitting on a table, you are more likely to open it up and look at it. Maybe you can reach for it instead of social media!

Same for your children, if the Biblical books are easily accessible, that’s what they’ll read.

So put them on the coffee tables, at the front of the bookshelf or simply lay out the kids’ books on the floor so they are noticeable! Encourage them to ask for a book instead of a screen.

As great as it is to have your Bible or other Christian books on your phone or tablet when they are out in our physical space, it becomes a constant reminder of God. And no one is going to notice the Bible app on your phone, but they may take notice of your Bible sitting on a side table or kitchen counter!

3. Christian Music

That’s right, blast those Christian tunes! It isn’t just about the physical layout of your home, it’s also what it sounds like. One of the best ways to worship our Lord and Saviour is through music.

There are hundreds of Christian artists, so whatever music style is your preference you will be able to find songs that bring God into space.

You also can sing songs with your children. Simple songs like “Jesus Loves Me” or “Deep and Wide” are great or there are worship songs like “Days of Elijah” that are fun for kids as well!

Praising God is a joyful way we can bring Him into our homes. It also reminds our children that they have a saviour who is with them whenever they sing the songs to themselves!

4. Pray Over Your Space

When was the last time you took a minute to pray over your space? Part of building a Christian home is praying over the areas we use!

We pray to ask for God’s protection, peace and presence in each area of our homes.

Pray over your kitchen and the food you prepare. Thank God for providing nourishment and ask Him to strengthen your physical body with it.

Pray over your bathroom as you are preparing yourself for the day. Thank God for access to clean water and for readiness to do His will.

Pray over your children’s rooms where they sleep and play. Thank God for warm beds to sleep in and pray for His peace to fill their hearts and minds.

Pray over your front door where you come and go from your home. Pray that no evil would come in and that God would go before you as you go out.

Remember prayer doesn’t have to be long and drawn out. God hears everything and when our children see us praying they will be more likely to follow our lead.

5. Talk About God

Share Bible stories or answers to prayer. Talk about God’s love and ways that we can share His kindness with others, inside and outside our space.

Building a Christ-centred home means that His name becomes a natural topic of conversation every day. Around the dinner table, while on a walk or when playing, God can be part of every activity.

Refer to Bible stories to remind your kids about what God can do for us! Courageous like David, faithful like Daniel or obedient like Noah. Make the Christian characteristics you want your kids to have start right at home.

When God becomes a household name in the sense that He is intentionally brought into conversation, He fills our space. We are reminded of His grace and goodness and who we are as Christians.

Build a Home That Invites God In

Your home is your space. It is a representation of who you are as an individual. Your decor can reflect that but it also should reflect who we are as Christians.

We want our space to invite God in. We want to build a Godly home that reminds us who else is present in the room (our Heavenly Father)!

This is what becomes the foundation for our family. When they return from work, school or activities, this is where they can unwind and find rest. When we have intentionally invited God into our dwelling, then our families can walk into a place of love.

It doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t have to be spotless, it just has to be filled with God’s presence! Find ways to bring Him into your home, whether through scripture art, books and media or with the daily conversations you have. Grow a Godly home and let His light brighten your space!
