5 Scriptures for Winter to Encourage You Through the Season

In those cold, dark days, sometimes you need verses to remind you of God’s faithfulness. Here are 5 scriptures for winter months to remind you that God is with us, always!

Scriptures for Winter

Here are 5 (plus one!) scriptures for winter when you need encouragement and hope!

1. Romans 15:13

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Sometimes what we need in wintertime is hope. It can start to get monotonous, day after day of wintry coldness. The short sunlit days, sometimes there’s no sun at all! It can be hard to stay optimistic.

Fortunately we have a God we can hope in. We know He is good and that if we put our trust in Him, we will be filled with joy and peace.

2. Micah 7:7

“But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.”

Yet another reminder of the hope we have in God. If our eyes stay on Him, and we wait for Him (yes even in the waiting we can find comfort!) God will hear us.

3. Isaiah 40:8

“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”

The trees have lost their leaves, the garden is a quiet lump of dirt and snow. But even in all the silent stillness of winter, we know that God endures. He will break every chain, even the chains of winter.

Take comfort in this season that our God stands forever, through rain, wind and snow!

4. Psalm 147:16-18

“He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes. He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast? He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.”

Such power our God has! This verse is a great reminder that it is God who made the winter, just as He made the summer. He is in control and it is not our job to try to change it, but seek God’s peace, comfort and joy during it!

5. John 1:5

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

I don’t know about you but I like sunshine. And the lack of sun in the winter is a real bummer. I often have to remind myself that just because it is literally dark outside, doesn’t mean my world is actually dark.

There is a bright light that shines all year long. Jesus is that light, He illuminates our path and walks with us, even through the dark winter evenings. The darkness will not overcome us this season (or any season!) because we have a saviour who overcame it!

I also use a light therapy lamp in the dark months. I love sitting beside it in the early winter mornings, Bible in one hand, coffee in the other. Get my favourite therapy lamp on Amazon!

6. Isaiah 41:10

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

One extra verse because I love it so much…God will strengthen you! In the season of depression and feeling blue, turn to God. He will uphold you.

And if you enjoy this winter season, because hey there is still hockey, curling, sledding and other fun activities (my son was born in the bleak -22C of January!), you also can take comfort in knowing that God is filling you with joy during this season too. He made winter for everyone, and we all can find things we enjoy…even if it’s enjoying the snow from the warmth of our kitchen windows!
