We experience life changes many time throughout our years on earth. Sometimes they are expected, sometimes they come out of the blue and sometimes, we expect them and they still blindside us. And yet, as we walk through these changes we see something amazing; God doesn’t change.

When Life Moves Quickly

When you are young, life tends to move quickly. From high school to college or university or working; there is excitement in the decisions being made. Independence is found and hopefully, a sense of purpose.

You travel, live out of a suitcase, have adventures and discover who you are.

You look for someone to spend your life with, dating, engagement and marriage. You watch friends and family walk down the aisle and you can’t wait for your own marriage adventure.

In these life changes you find God to be the one you depend on to guide you. He has the map, so you stay close to him so you can follow it. You’re jittery and sometimes run ahead in anticipation of what may come. This gets you into trouble, but God is always there to pick you up and set you on track again.

Sometimes it feels like things aren’t moving fast enough and you want God to hurry up, but as the years go by you see that His timing was always perfect, even if it felt too slow.

Life changes quickly in these times and it can seem like God changes along with it, but He doesn’t. His plans and purposes were always the same, they take you where you need to be, as long as you follow them.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6

When Life Feels Slow

As life changes again and you enter the “waiting” stage, waiting for a baby, waiting on kids, waiting on summer…you start to see God in a new way.

You no longer want to run ahead in a hurry, you want time to slow down, so you can enjoy the moments a little longer. The days feel long but the years are so short, and you are caught between waiting while also feeling like you need an extension in patience.

God becomes a source of comfort and strength. Holding you when you feel broken and tired, lifting you up when you feel unable to stand any longer.

Life changes, and it seems like God changed but He didn’t. His presence is the same, His love is the same, He doesn’t change.

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.

Psalm 37:7

When Life Feels Lonely

And then there’s the times in your life when things feel lonely. A relationship that didn’t work, a death or loss, an expected outcome that didn’t happen. It can feel like you are walking this life change alone.

Even if you are surrounded by people, you can feel the emptiness that grief brings. The hope and anticipation taken away, knocking the wind out of you.

Sometimes God seems quiet in these moments. You aren’t sure if He hears you, if He is aware of your struggle.

But He also hasn’t changed in these times. Through anger or grief, He remains the same.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Matthew 5:4

When Life Changes, God Doesn’t Change

In all our circumstances we face, good or bad, we can have faith that God will not change. We know this because of what the Bible says. The love He has for His children is unfailing, it is new every morning.

I have seen God’s steadiness, and it has given me strength, direction and the quiet contentment needed in life’s changes. When something comes up, I have learned to turn to God first. Before I do anything, I seek God’s wisdom. And I trust that His unchanging ways will guide me.

Even when it doesn’t always make sense, even when I never fully understand the wider plan, I can trust that God knows all things and has a reason for it.

It’s in this that I can trust God in the changes. I can weather a storm because He is my anchor. Life changes, God does not.

“I the Lord do not change.”

Malachi 3:6

God’s Faithfulness

If you pay attention, you will see this same God in your life. The God who walked with you in difficult moments, who guided you through changes and rejoiced during the exciting times, He is the same.

If we turn bitterness towards God during our difficult days, we miss His blessings. We miss His comfort and His gentle leading. He will be faithful, even if we can’t see it in the moment.

Wherever you find yourself right now, have faith. Life changes, we know this to be true, but we also know that God doesn’t change. His mercies are new every morning, new but not different. We don’t wake up to a different God. We wake up to the same, loving God who formed us in our mother’s wombs.

So in every circumstance, every change, every monotonous day, we can trust in His faithfulness. He does not change, and for that, we can give thanks.

God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?
