Have you been praying the same prayer for months — maybe even years — and the silence is starting to feel deafening? You are wondering if God is even listening, if He even cares, and what to do when prayer goes unanswered feels like the most urgent question you have. Here is the truth that changes everything: when prayer feels empty, there is really only one thing to do — pray more. But more importantly, we need to start asking a better question. Not “why aren’t my prayers being answered?” but “what should I be praying right now?” Because that shift changes everything.

Silence Doesn’t Mean God Is Ignoring You
The first thing I want you to really hear is that God does not ignore us. He is not turning His back on you. He is not pretending He cannot hear you. Scripture makes this clear over and over again — He is with us at all times, in every season, including this one.
When you read the Psalms you see it so beautifully. The author goes through these phases of crying out to God — asking why he feels so alone, why he is experiencing all of these difficulties, feeling like nobody is listening. And then he comes back around full circle: no, God is still here. He is faithful. He is with me. The praise and the thanksgiving come pouring back out.
Job is another powerful example — someone who endured probably every horrible thing that could happen to a person. He certainly was not happy about it. But he did not walk away from God. And God rewarded that faithfulness abundantly.
So what does the silence actually mean? A few things worth sitting with.
Sometimes silence is a season of growth. Our faith is deepening, our reliance on scripture is strengthening, our confidence in God is being built underneath the surface even when we cannot feel it. The key is what we do with that silence — do we use it to grow or do we turn away?
Sometimes God is quiet because something is being prepared outside of your control. There may be a situation, a person, circumstances you know nothing about — and God is working behind the scenes to set things up. He is quiet simply because He is dealing with it. He has something going on that you cannot see yet.
And sometimes — and this one is hard to hear — God is quiet because He already gave us the answer. Maybe the answer was no and we just did not really hear it. Or maybe we heard it and pretended we did not. I know I have done that — kept coming back asking the same question over and over again, convinced that could not possibly be His answer.

Sometimes We Are Praying the Wrong Thing
This is the part that I think changes everything. Sometimes our prayer feels empty not because God does not want to answer them — but because we are praying for the wrong thing entirely.
Hannah is such a powerful example of this. She prayed for a baby for years and years. And then something shifted in her. She told God that if He gave her a son she would give that child back to Him. That was not a prayer of desperation anymore — that was a prayer of surrender. She opened her heart to God’s greater plan without even knowing what that plan looked like.

When prayer feels empty, read this or share it with someone who needs it.
She had no idea who Samuel was going to become. She had no idea that this baby she had prayed and wept and waited for was going to be the prophet who anointed David. She had no idea that her surrender in prayer was going to ripple through generations. But she changed her heart position — and that changed everything.
And that is exactly what I want you to think about today. Sometimes our prayers need to stop looking so far into the future and start focusing on what is right in front of us. Instead of “God, I want this, I have my eye set on this” — what if the prayer became “God, prepare my heart for what You are already working on?”
Because sometimes the silence is simply preparation. It might be preparation happening outside of you — situations and people that need to be ready. But you need to be prepared too. And the only way to prepare is to actually ask Him to help prepare you.

The Prayer That Changes Everything
I can actually pinpoint the exact prayer that changed the whole trajectory of my life. It was when I stopped asking God for what I wanted and simply prayed for Him to open my heart to His will. That is when everything started moving. It required a lot of change and it was not easy. But I grew as a Christian and as an individual in ways I never would have otherwise.
And then there was what I call my “kitchen prayer” — a prayer I prayed for over a month without even fully knowing what I was asking for. I just kept asking the Holy Spirit to give me the words, over and over again, not knowing what needed to change or where the change needed to happen. And then one ordinary morning I was standing at the counter making breakfast, peanut butter and knife in hand, and I just knew. I knew exactly what I needed to pray. And that was the day the answer came.
Because there had been a time, a person, a situation that had to be prepared first. All I could do was keep praying on my end and trust that God was working on His end — even when I could not see any of it happening.
When Prayer Feels Empty; Keep Praying — Here Is How

So here is what I want you to walk away with today. When you are figuring out what to do when prayer goes unanswered — keep those lines of communication with God open. Even if you are frustrated. Even if you are angry. Even if you feel like you are speaking into the void. Keep talking to Him.
But also ask yourself these honest questions:
Has God already answered and I am the one not listening? Sometimes we are pressing for more when He has already spoken and we just do not like what He said.
Is my heart positioned to receive what God has for me? Sometimes the prayer that needs to be prayed is not for the thing we want — it is for our own hearts to be softened and prepared for whatever He has planned.
Am I praying scripture? Go back to the Word. Test what you are praying against scripture. Write your prayers down so you can look back and see where God moved — because He does move, even when it feels like nothing is happening.
And then surrender the outcome. Pray it right out loud: “God, I trust that what You have planned is better than what I am asking for.” Let that be your anchor prayer in the waiting.
God is always listening. He is always with you. He is working — even in the silence, even when you cannot see it, even when you are standing in your kitchen on an ordinary Tuesday wondering what on earth is going on.
He hears you, Mama. Keep praying.
