When it comes to decorating your home for fall, it can be tempting to buy all the new items that appear on store shelves. Suddenly your arms are filled with pumpkin mugs, blankets and wreaths and you don’t know which to take and which to put back. Here are some inexpensive ways to decorate so you don’t feel tempted at the store!

Decorating Your Home for Fall Without OverSpending

I love decorating. Changing even a few items in my living room transforms the entire space. It also gives us something to talk about as a family. In the fall, we can talk about the bounty God has given us with the growing season and how we should be thankful!

Decorating can get expensive though, so here are some ideas for decorating your home for fall without spending too much!

Budget First Mindset

It’s good to remember that decorating is stewardship. It doesn’t mean buying more (aka consuming more), because that can be wasteful. God wants us to fill our lives with beauty and joy but not if it takes away from how He wants us to live.

God doesn’t want us to have more just because it makes us feel good. We aren’t looking for a Pinterest worthy home, we want a cozy space that is infused with God.

Make fall an opportunity to steward what you have and what God has given you, it is the season of bounty!

Then set a budget. Whether it’s $0 or $100, because it’s okay to refresh your home items!

Free or Almost Free Decor Items

There are plenty of ways to decorate on a free or almost free budget.

The season is filled with harvestable items that you can find in your park or backyard! Things like pinecones, leaves or small branches to use as a table runner.

Grocery store finds like mini pumpkins, gourds or corn stalks. Or take your children to a pumpkin patch to pick their own, a family experience that also gives you items to decorate with!

I like to reuse my burlap wreath every season. I simply swap out the items on the wreath with dollar store flowers or decoration items. It suits just about everything.

I also purchase items with the mindset of reusing them in several seasons. Glass vases that can be filled with seasonal items like acorns and pinecones in fall and then twinkle lights in winter.

Also, don’t buy holiday specific decor. Choose items that can last all season. I don’t buy Thanksgiving specific items, unless it can sit on a shelf for 3 months.

I also don’t buy Halloween themed items in any form. It’s a personal choice (I don’t encourage fear in my home), but also a frugal one, because I can’t use it after Halloween. I decorate with pumpkins and other fall related items.

Room-by-Room Ideas

• Entryway: A simple burlap wreath is my go-to for my front door or entry way. You can pick up fake flowers or leaves at the dollar store and voila, enjoy!
• Kitchen: I hang seasonal items from my cabinets. Easy to swap out and adds a festive flair without taking up counter space.
• Kitchen table: Use a runner or simple centrepiece with foraged items to make your table festive. if you have young children and don’t want items they will reach for (yes, I’ve been there), you usually can find fall themed place mats which are a fun way for kids to feel festive while eating.
• Mantel or Bookshelf: Choose items that can be reused every season or next year. This might mean planning a colour scheme and only buying those colours, or choosing items you know won’t go out of style. I like fall themed items with simple words like “Thankful” or “Gather.”
• Bedrooms: Let your kids decorate their room with craft projects, door hangers or other fun seasonal items
• Simple Scents: I don’t like overpowering candles or wall-plug ins. I like a simple stovetop simmer or essential oil blend. Cinnamon is my favourite for this time of year and makes the entire house smell like fall!

DIY and Kid-Friendly Projects

Burlap Wreath – I made my burlap wreath years ago and it’s still going strong. They are simple to make and don’t require a lot of supplies.

Painted Pumpkins – We carve our pumpkins but you also can paint them! This is another fun way to decorate and lasts longer than a carved pumpkin.

Cinnamon Sticks – I love the smell of cinnamon and use cinnamon sticks into the winter months for decor. You can use them to tie around mason jars or candles. Simply stand them up and get some twine to tie around them and voila!

Printable Items – I love swapping out my scriptures in the new season. This is a great time to get some fall themed printable scriptures!

Smart Shopping

I typically buy “new” decor items in November when they are on sale. I won’t buy them at full price (unless it’s the dollar or discount store).

Look for items at second hand stores, vases that can be repurposed, trays that can be cleaned or painted.

Buy pillow inserts and swap out the covers as the seasons change.

And my absolute favourite, find items that can be used in multiple seasons. Vases, picture frames, pictures or wall art etc. My sister-in-law gave me a beautiful white vase that holds seasonal items on our bookshelf. It hasn’t moved (except to hold new items) in 3 years.

Christian Home

A Christian home can be a decorated home. It can fit your style, whatever that may be. If decorating makes your home feel cozier and well-loved, then don’t be afraid to swap out your decor items.
