Your Home is Not a DIY Project – 5 Ways to Let the Professional (God) Build Your Christian Space and Life

When it comes to building your Christian space, it’s important to remember that we need the Professional Builder to design and construct our lives. The way we live our life is going to impact how our home functions and God doesn’t treat your life like a DIY project, He is there to make sure the foundation is strong and you will be able to withstand every storm that comes your way!

Are you a DIYer? Do you have an aptitude for fixing things or do you get a professional to come in and make sure things are done perfectly?

Home renovations are expensive. I know because we’ve been slowly redoing our home, bedrooms, kitchen, living room, basement and eventually bathrooms. Getting professionals in is expensive, I know that too because that’s what we did with our kitchen renovation.

When redoing something in your home you want to make sure it is done right, sometimes DIY isn’t the best option, especially if you aren’t a trained electrician and you need to do some rewiring.

It can feel frustrating when you have to pay someone to come in a do a job that seems simple enough. But letting professionals handle the things we know we shouldn’t be sticking our fingers in not only ensures it is done right but also keeps us safe!

Your Home is not a DIY project for God. 5 ways to let God build your Christian space

Your Home is Not a DIY Project

In terms of a Christian home and creating a dwelling space that has God in it, it’s best to let the professional manage the “renovations.” God is the professional, the one who should be handling all the heavy lifting, rewiring, plumbing and design for your life.

Even if you are a designer by nature (like me!) we need to let God be in charge of the blueprints for our spaces. God is not going to treat your home like a DIY project that He is doing to save money. This isn’t about cutting corners to get the job done faster and cheaper. This is about putting in hard work so that our lives and homes are a space that reflects our love for Christ.

Of course, God isn’t going to come in and give you directions on how to do things. Letting Him design our home means that we are letting Him be in control of our lives. He is after all, the master builder (Hebrews 3:4)!

But how do we let God come in and build our Christian space?

How do You Let The Professional Build Your Christian Space?

1. Let God In

Short and sweet, and hopefully this is something you’ve already done! But Jesus is at the door knocking (Revelation 3:20). They can’t begin working on your life if you haven’t let them in! So answer that knock, let them come in and start building a Christian space to raise your family in.

2. Trust the Lord with All Your Heart

You have to trust the Lord with all your heart, all your mind and all your strength (Proverbs 3:5-6). If you undermine Him, if you think His blueprints are wrong and yours are better, then you may as well ask Him to leave altogether.

You have to believe that God knows what He is doing, that this isn’t some weekend warrior DIY project He is undertaking. He is here for the long haul and this isn’t the first time He’s done this. He knows what He is doing and He knows you more intimately than you know yourself.

He is here to solidify the foundation, to build strong walls, a roof to withstand the rain and fill your home with light, goodness and peace. But we have to let Him be the one to do these things. We have to let Him work in our lives and the lives of our families. If we constantly grab the hammer and insist we do the job for Him, we never get to see the finished product He has for us!

3. Keep God’s Words Close

Deuteronomy 11:18-20 is a passage that reminds us how important God’s words are. He instructs us to “fix these [God’s] words to our hearts and minds.” They should be front and centre in our lives, in the way we behave, the words we speak and how we raise our children.

We should speak about God as fluently as we talk about the weather, our daily activities or the news. When He is part of our daily conversations He is present in our lives, strengthening us, giving us wisdom and building us into the people He needs us to be.

And we should write these words on the door frames of our houses. The Bible doesn’t speak much to what our homes should look like but it does say we should have scripture on our door frames! This is why we should have scripture cards in our kitchen windows, Christian decor on our walls and Bible books on our tables.

When God’s word is close at hand, we are able to follow His plans more closely. We can reach for scripture in every situation and teach our children about God’s love and faithfulness through the stories in the Bible.

4. Let God Remove, Rebuild and Restore

Sometimes renovations mean taking out existing materials and making something new. This can be dirty, difficult and sometimes sad! Saying goodbye to a space we thought we loved can be difficult. But we have to let God prune us of areas that are not fruitful.

If the sink is leaking, we need to replace it. Just as if we struggle with gossip we need God to help us hold our tongue. Or we may find our old wallpaper nostalgic when it is secretly hiding structural issues underneath that need to be attended to.

God knows all these things. He knows what we struggle with and how we are trying to hide it. He knows that a house can’t be strong if there are cracks in the foundation and walls and sometimes, He has to remove, rebuild and restore things in our lives.

We shouldn’t be trying to do the self-help method when it comes to building our Christian lives. We need to let God manage any and all repairs!

God knows you better than anyone else. He won't treat your Christian space like a DIY project.

5. Follow God In The Way Everlasting

Let God continue to guide and direct you. Unlike a contractor who will take your money and run, God is going to stay until you are called to your forever home. You are not a DIY project that gets finished so He can move on to the next. He is here day in and day out.

Let Him lead you in the way everlasting (Psalm 139:24). Let Him be present every day to help you with creaky floors, changing your smoke detectors and fixing leaky faucets.

By steeping in God’s word and remaining close to Him, you know that He is close at hand. He is ready to help when problems arise.

God Wants Strong Christian Homes

God wants Christian spaces as much as we do. He doesn’t want DIY projects that are held together with duct tape and prayer. He wants things to be built on the rock, with blueprints that create a home to last for years and years.

Your Home is not a DIY project for God

When our homes are built on a strong foundation, no amount of storms or rain or wind will bring it down.

God desires that you create a space for you and your family to grow in. He wants your life to reflect who you are as a Christian and your home to be the place where you are grounded in your faith.

Let God build your Christian space. Don’t treat it like a DIY project. Build it right the first time so there is no crumbling, leaking or destruction. Let your Heavenly Father take control and help you grow a home that will withstand all the wind, rain and storms that come your way!
