prayer to surrender to God

When you need a prayer to surrender to God, read these scriptures and then pour your heart out to your Heavenly Father!

Surrender is one of those words that sounds so beautiful in a sermon. But in the middle of a Tuesday, when your kids are melting down, your to-do list feels beyond impossible, and you are running on empty — surrendering to God is the last thing that comes naturally.

And yet it might be the most powerful thing you do today.

Here’s what I want you to know: surrender isn’t weakness. Just like gentleness isn’t weakness. Surrender is actually the strongest thing you can do as a mom. It’s saying, “God, I can’t do this on my own — and I’m done pretending I can.”

Today we’re talking about what it means to pray a prayer to surrender to God, and I’ve got four scripture-based prayers you can start using right away — even in the chaos of the dinner hour.

PS. These scriptures are from my free 30-day Scripture Writing Plan “Rooted in Christ“

We Were Never Meant to Carry This Alone

As moms, we carry so much. We know our children in the deepest way — every little detail, every quirk, every need. And because we know them so well, we feel so responsible for them. Which we are! But that responsibility was never meant to crush us.

When we start to feel burdened — really burdened — that is the moment to unburden ourselves and surrender it to God. And I want to be really clear about what that means, because I think we get this wrong sometimes.

Surrendering to God is not saying “God, I don’t want these kids anymore.” It is not giving up. It is not going to bed and pulling the covers over your head.

It’s an exchange. It’s saying, “God, I am feeling frustrated by this. I am overwhelmed by this. I want You to be in control of this situation. Fill me with grace and patience and peace — whatever I need right now.” You hand Him the heavy thing, and He gives you what you need to keep going.

And here’s what I love about this — it is one of the most powerful things we can model for our children. Instead of having a meltdown ourselves, we show them what it looks like to take our feelings to God. We show them that when we’re done with an emotion, we don’t just stuff it down — we bring it to Jesus.

How to Pray Scripture in the Hard Moments

Praying scripture is something I talk about endlessly because it is just so powerful. When we pray God’s own words back to Him, it focuses our minds on what He says is true instead of what our feelings are telling us in the moment.

And Mama, it doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to pray these word for word. You could take just one line. You could whisper it under your breath while you’re stirring the pasta. The Holy Spirit will meet you right there.

Remember — prayer is meant to change us, not God. These prayers are meant to unburden us, to open us up to receive what God already wants to give us. Sometimes we just have to ask.

Here are four prayers pulled straight from Week 2 of the Rooted in Christ Scripture Writing Plan. Save them, write them on a card, put them on your fridge — whatever helps you get to them when you need them most.

Prayer to Surrender to God – 4 Scriptures

Prayer 1 — Psalm 139:7-12 When you feel alone and unseen

“Lord, I surrender the places in my life where I have felt hidden or forgotten. Your Word says there is nowhere I can go where You are not already there. Even in my darkest moments, even in the overwhelming days of motherhood where I feel invisible — You see me. You are there. I surrender my loneliness to You today and choose to trust that I am never out of Your sight. Amen.”

Prayer 2 — Psalm 51:5-12 When you need a fresh start

“God, I surrender my mistakes and my guilt to You today. Your Word says create in me a clean heart — and that is what I’m asking for right now. I don’t want to carry yesterday’s failures into today’s moments with my children. Renew a right spirit within me. Restore to me the joy of walking with You, and let that joy be what my family sees when they look at me. Amen.”

Prayer 3 — Psalm 25:15-21 When you feel overwhelmed and trapped

“Lord, my eyes are on You today — not on my circumstances, not on everything that feels hard and impossible right now. I surrender my overwhelm to You. Your Word says You will free my feet from the net — from everything that has me feeling stuck and tangled. I trust that You see my situation and that You are already working in it. I choose to look up instead of around. Amen.”

This prayer to surrender to God is one of my personal favourites because I feel overwhelmed easily. I know that feeling of looking around and seeing rocks and dandelions on top of the recycling and dishes, and the counter that needs wiping, and the thing that needs to be put away — and just feeling like it’s all too much. And then being reminded: look up, not around. It’s beautiful overwhelm, Mama. It’s your children causing it, and they are wonderful. Hand it to God and let Him carry it with you.

Prayer 4 — Matthew 6:1-8 When you’re striving for recognition and running on empty

“Father, I surrender my striving to You today. Forgive me for the moments when I have been doing things for the wrong reasons — for approval, for recognition, to feel like I’m enough. Your Word reminds me that You already see everything I do in secret. You see the quiet faithfulness, the unseen sacrifices, the prayers whispered over sleeping children. That is enough for You. Let it be enough for me too. Amen.”

Surrender Is a Daily Practice

Here’s the thing, Mama — a prayer to surrender to God is probably not going to be a one-time prayer. This is something you might find yourself practicing every single day. I know I do.

Every part of my motherhood journey — I need to be surrendering to Him. And especially in those moments when the overwhelm starts creeping in and the frustration rises and the patience is wearing thin — that is the moment to lay it down before God and say, “I am struggling. I need You to fill me with patience, with peace, with Your presence, so that I can speak words of love and truth and kindness into my children and into my family.”

You don’t have to have it all together, Mama. You just have to be willing to hand it over.

God’s presence is always with you — in the dinner hour chaos, in the bedtime battles, in the quiet moments when you finally sit down and wonder if you’re doing any of this right. He is there. He sees you. And He is so ready to carry this with you.

All you have to do is ask.
