Tell your kids you love them. Wrap them in your warm embrace. Build them up with words of affirmation. Speak truth over them.
I posted this graphic on my social media pages this morning. It was early before my boys were awake. It was dark and quiet, I had my coffee and the dog patiently waiting for his breakfast.
For some reason, I struggled to put it together. I was tired, my back hurt and my husband was going to be working all day. I wasn’t feeling very inspired, but I felt the need to post it.
Then I went to get my three-year-old out of bed. We picked his clothes and headed to the bathroom. As I helped him get changed he started talking about all the people he loves. Daddy, his brother, Hobbs, Nana & Papa, Grandma & Grandpa and me. Then he gave me a big hug.
And if this wasn’t the biggest confirmation about speaking love into our children I don’t know what is!
To Feel Loved
Waking up, and knowing how much you are loved is exactly how we want our kids to feel.
When we tell our kids that they are children of God, created and loved by him, it has a profound impact on them. Science can do all the studies in the world and report all the benefits of loving your child but it is God who shows us how to love them. And this action of love from Him is what wakes our kids up in the morning with a profound understanding of love.
We don’t realize the imprint love has on kids. We don’t see their hearts and minds grow as they learn about love. But it does happen.
As Christians, we are marked with God’s love. Not a mark that causes pain and perhaps it’s less of a mark and more of a spark. A spark that ignites into flame. A burning desire to love as God loves. Kids learn this through the love you show them.
Start the Conversation
Starting the conversation with your kids is easy to do. Talk about love, how God loves us and how we love others.
Repeat to your kids every day that they are cherished and loved by you and God. Fill their ears with biblical truths about God’s faithfulness. Sing songs about His goodness. Love them as God loves you. Unconditionally.
Let them feel safe in the knowledge that when they go to sleep they will wake up with love in their home.
Don’t be afraid to shower love on your kids. Fill their love cups until they are overflowing. Spark in them the desire to love and be loved by the Lord Almighty. As you do this, ask God to do the same for you.
We love because he first loved us.

Every time you tell your children “I love you,” remind yourself that God loves you too. You have been sparked by his love and are filled with His fire. So love because he first loved us and speak it to your children every day!
