Christian Homemaking – Loving Your Role Even When It Feels Overwhelming

Christian homemaking is more than washing dishes and teaching your children about Jesus. The importance of it goes much deeper than that. But how do you be a biblical homemaker when you feel overwhelmed? How do you be a good Christian homemaker?

What Is Christian Homemaking?

Christian homemaking is just what it sounds like! It’s making your home Christ-centred. It’s filling your home with God’s peace and His love. It’s grounding your family in His word, every single day.

It’s being the heart of the home, pumping your family with the love, joy and peace that your Heavenly Father fills you with. And in doing this, you create a space filled with a feeling of safety and security because the Holy Spirit is present within your walls, protecting and providing for everyone inside.

It is not an easy role, and on the days when you feel overwhelmed it is still possible to raise your family in a Christian space!

The role of a biblical homemaker is more than just doing dishes. The importance of it extends deeper and requires a relationship with your Heavenly Father that will allow your family to be built on The Rock.

How Do You Love Your Role As A Christian Homemaker When You Feel Overwhelmed?

1. Have An Attitude of Gratitude

Loving your family is one thing, loving the job you do for your family is another. The same tasks day after day can feel monotonous, especially when it feels like no one notices.

This is where we as Christian homemakers need to remember our work goes unpaid, unthanked and unnoticed by people but not by God.

In the story of Mary and Martha, the attitude of the two sisters is what prompted Jesus to make a comment.

Martha was doing good work, but with an attitude of discontent because her sister wasn’t helping. Instead, if she had seen it as a joyful opportunity that her sister could sit at the feet of Jesus, she likely would have felt differently.

Our perception affects our thoughts and thus our actions. If we perceive our work as meaningless because no one cares, we will start to act that way when we do it. Instead, we should see the joy in doing tasks for our children, and in the process teach them to have joy in their jobs as well.

Share with a mom who could use some encouragement!

2. Raise Your Children in Scripture

Steep your children in scripture. Let it be part of your daily conversations, the examples you use for behaviour or the fun games you play. There is a place for the Bible in your day to day activities.

This is important for Christian homemaking because it reminds moms about their Heavenly Father. He becomes part of our lives, sitting in the room with our families because He is part of our conscious thoughts.

Christian homemaking is teaching your children about who God is and how He loves them

3. Pray Over Your Space

Anointing your home, or praying over your space is important. While we may think of Christian homemaking as doing the basic necessary chores of keeping things clean and our children fed, their is a deeper need than the physical necessities.

The walls we inhabit, the rooms we spend time in need prayer because of the people who live there.

When we pray over our spaces, we pray over the people who will be in those areas. We pray for peace, protection, health, rest or joy, depending on what the space is!

You don’t have to pray out loud either, it can be silent prayers over each room as you walk into to. Pray over your stairs as you go up and down, pray for health and strength in your kitchen as you cook, for peace and comfort while your children sleep.

One of the most powerful tools you have as a homemaker is prayer. Cover your home in prayer as you go about your day. Not sure what to pray? Check out my 30-day guided course to give you scriptures and prayers. Check it out HERE.

4. Find Rest In God’s Presence

I find rest in your presence.

Exodus 33:14

You may not find time for a break, but you can find rest in God’s presence.

Moms don’t often have time for themselves, especially with young children. This constant feeling of being needed, or having to be mentally aware of your children is wearisome.

Seek God’s rest, always. Seek his peace in the chaos. Remember He is your gentle leader and is carrying your children close to His heart as He guides you to green pastures.

5. Do Not Seek Human Perfection

Do not be tempted to be perfect by human standards. God is the only perfect piece in our lives and we should strive for His perfection, no one else’s.

Cultivate the fruits of the spirit and plan your days with God. Set yourself up for success by growing stronger in faith through prayer and reading your Bible. To be a biblical homemaker means knowing God’s word in an intimate way.

What the world deems to be perfect can change on a whim, but God is forever. Let the Lord Everlasting be the one who sets your feet on solid ground.

Build Your Home on God

Christian homemaking is about what is in your heart, it starts with you. It starts with your attitude, your teaching, your prayers and your love. If all those things come from God, if He is the rock you are building your household on, then you are well on your way to creating a Christian dwelling space!
