Why We Need the Bible, Especially as Moms

Why do we need the Bible? It seems like a dumb question but it’s really not!

The Bible is not just for encouragement but also to learn God’s plan and purpose for our lives (and our family). Building a Christian home means being grounded in God’s word, knowing His instructions and keeping them close to our hearts as we raise our children.

This is why we need the Bible!

Following Someone’s Instructions

Do you love following instructions? Do you read them carefully, word by word and do exactly as they say? Do you make up songs and poems about how good instructions are and why we need to follow them?

Probably not. I’ll be honest, I’m not much of a rule-follower. I rarely follow a recipe exactly as it is written, I’m always putting my spin on things and have no problem “bending” the rules so they work in my favour.

Of course, I would never do anything illegal or hurt anyone, but I am not opposed to changing things if I don’t think they are right.

Except when it comes to the Bible. That is one area where I follow what is written, religiously (no pun intended!) I don’t write poems and music about how much I love the laws of the Bible, unlike Psalm 119, which is 176 verses that mostly talk about loving God’s laws and instructions. But I do refer back to it daily.

The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Psalm 119:72

Psalm 119 does seem a little over the top, like a lawyer who likes his job a little too much. How can you find such joy in laws and rules?

And yet when you read and reread the chapter it isn’t just obeying the laws for the fun of it, it’s obeying them because there is goodness in them.

If we are to understand what God is saying, to understand His plan for our life, we must know the words He breathed into the Bible.

This is why it is important not to “bend” what the Bible says. It isn’t a cake recipe where we can substitute oil for butter or white sugar for brown. We need to understand what it says and follow it carefully.

Why We Need the Bible

This is why we need the Bible, why we find joy in His laws. The Bible is more than a rule book, it is a glimpse at who our Heavenly Father is and what He promises for us.

We Need the Bible for God’s Plans

The joy comes in trusting God and following His plan for our lives. When He reveals things to us, or we walk in faith, we are filled with the security of His love. We know that for those who love the Lord, all things work for good (Romans 8:28)!

We need this as moms. The reason why we need the Bible is because it is our understanding of our Heavenly Father. The scriptures we quote (like the one above) are inspired by God. While many of them are rules, God gave us those rules so we can walk in righteousness. And as we walk His path, we walk His plan!

Just as parents we have rules for our children to keep them safe, God has done the same for us. His laws keep us from falling into the entrapment of evil. They keep us from following false leaders. They keep us from naively leading our children in the wrong direction.

Walking God’s path means walking His plan; everything He designed specifically for you.

His road maps are what keep us safe but also give us the life He desired for us. His plans may not make sense in the moment but they come together to be perfect if we follow them.

We Need the Bible to Be Reminded That We Are Human

If you haven’t read Psalm 38, go and have a read. It isn’t a happy chapter filled with inspiration and encouragement but it does remind us of our humanness.

It is a Psalm that complains the entire time about the physical pain the author is experiencing. And at first glance it seems morbid and sad, but when you reread it, you see the raw emotions of being human. How often do we experience physical pain as a mom?

I have felt more physical pain while raising children than at any other time in my life. Postpartum recovery, pelvic floor problems, mastitis, hormone rebalancing, illness…every little thing seemed to hit me while I tried to care for my children. And when I felt frustrated or discouraged, I turned to Psalms.

The Bible reminds us that it’s okay to be human. There are countless stories of broken people who called out to God and were redeemed by His grace.

Psalms is one of my favourite books of the Bible to read because it reminds us that it’s okay to be human, to be broken and to call out to God in anguish. It shows us that physical pain sometimes is part of the journey and God doesn’t love us any less than He did before.

We need the Bible, with these stories in it to show us that others went through similar experiences. And as we read we find out what to do as we face the same thing. We cry out to God! We lay it down, cast it on Him and let Him carry the heavy burdens that we cannot.

We Need the Bible to Be Reminded of God’s Faithfulness

As we are reminded of our brokenness, we also are reminded of God’s perfection. His perfect love, His faithfulness and His peace is what restores us. This is one of the most important things we find in the Bible; God’s promise of redemption.

Time and time again God has saved His people from big mistakes and small ones. Jesus called sinners out of trees, met them at the well and broke bread with them. He called them from their everyday tasks and told them how loved they were, giving them living water so they would never be thirsty again.

The Bible tells you Jesus loves you, but it shows you that He will meet you where you are, in whatever state you find yourself in.

This is what we need as moms. When we need a break, a chance to recharge or to pray. We need to see that God will meet us where we are at. He will seek us if we seek Him.

He makes good on His promises and even though we may have to wait for Him, when we wait at His feet we are strengthened.

Read The Bible

This is why we need the Bible. This is why we must read it everyday. This is why we put scripture cards on our bedside table so we can be reminded when we wake up and before we go to bed that God is our great provider.

As moms we need the Bible in ways we never imagined. We need it for ourselves, for our children and for our family.

So check in with God. If you haven’t done it yet today, go and read a Psalm. Download a Bible app on your phone so you can access it on the go. Keep those scriptures close, write them on your door frames, anoint your home with prayer and read the Bible like it is the living bread you need to live on!
