How Do You Build a Home for God? It Starts With You Mama!

A home for God doesn’t mean you spend every waking moment meditating on scripture or have verses plastered all over your walls. A home for God is deeper than that! Let’s explore.

Moms are the heart of the home, I say this all the time. They spend much of their time in their homes, cooking meals, doing laundry, vacuuming and caring for children.

It’s only natural for moms to use this opportunity to build a home for God! And when they build their homes on the Cornerstone, they can rest knowing whatever wind, rain or storms blow through, the house will not be shaken because of God’s mighty hand of protection.

Build a Home for God

Obviously, you don’t have to be a carpenter in order to do this, we aren’t talking about physically building a space but rather taking the one you have and inviting the holy spirit to be present in every space.

And before you get upset about adding one more thing to your to-do list, these are things that can be done simultaneously as you are going about your daily activities, in fact they will help you in doing your daily activities!

Put God First

Part of loving your role as a Christian homemaker is to put God first. When you do this, it helps turn your attitude to that of joy.

(Read more about having an attitude of joy here)

This is incredibly important when building a home for God. We want a space that is joy-filled. Sometimes our families need someone to lead them on this path of joy. They need to be reminded about the good things they have and if mom exudes God’s joy, it spreads to everyone else.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Romans 15:13

So put God first. In the morning when you wake up, seek Him first. Take time during the day for quiet prayer…and yes this can happen even in the busyness of the day. In the evening reflect on the day and seek God’s grace for the things you wish you had done differently and prepare your heart for more of His wisdom in the coming day!

A home for God starts with a heart of joy! Put God first in all things and be filled with His joyful spirit.

Anoint Your Home With Prayer

Pray over each space. You may not think about it but each area needs different prayers!

Praying scripture will have a profound impact on your home, and each individual room. Consider the people who spend time in those areas and what they need while they are there.

Pray over the doorframes, pray over the front step, pray that God’s mighty hand would protect your home and everyone who passes through it!

Invite the Holy Spirit into Your Space

The Holy Spirit is for more than a worship service. It can fill you, and your home if you ask Him to be present.

Take time every morning to pray that the Holy Spirit will be with you throughout your day-to-day activities. Pray that it will fill your children’s spaces as they sleep. Pray it would engulf your family in peace and security within your walls.

Fill Your Home With Love

A home of love is a home filled with God. Love covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8), it forgives, it protects and it grows. There is a reason why love is talked about so much in the Bible!

But I am going to be real with you for a minute. Loving your family can be hard, that’s why we practice it everyday. And when we remember that we don’t have to be perfect, we can rest in the knowledge that on the days when we falter, God is filling in the gaps.

If we show our children God’s love, not only do they feel it but they see how they can love others. They can practice it within your walls and take this learned love with them into the world and eventually into their own families!

Show Your Children God’s love

  • Talk about God’s blessings
  • Say audible prayers of thanksgiving, need or forgiveness
  • Talk about Bible stories and how God was faithful to His people (or the person in the story)
  • Remind your children that God put them in your family for a reason and you love God for that (and you love them too!)
  • Get scripture cards or verses to put around your home to be reminded of God’s goodness!

A home for God starts with you. Seek God’s joy in your journey so your family sees Him shine through your mothering.

A Home for God is Built with God

Your home is built with God. It takes time, it takes prayer and it takes love. Your prayers will change over the years as your family grows. But the foundation will always be there.

Even if your physical space changes, a home for God starts in your heart and you can take the roots you have made and plant them elsewhere.

Build your home for God on His foundation of love and the truths He gave you in the Bible. Trust His leading and keep speaking His peace over your dwelling!
