How do you put God first as a busy mom? Let’s go through some ways!
Motherhood is busy, there is no doubt about that. You may have had a great relationship with God before children and afterwards it feels like you have lost the spark.
How do you connect with God in all the chaos? How do you seek Him when the days end before they start or one day runs into the next?
I’ve been there…feeling tired and overwhelmed with the beautiful chaos my life had become. I wish someone had told me these things before I went to pieces some days.

Put God First as a Busy Mom
Seek God Before Your Children Get Up
I know this is hard, especially if you are blessed with early risers (like I am). But having coffee with Jesus will change your life, literally.
If you sit down in the morning with just God, it helps put your day in perspective. It gives you the opportunity to seek God’s plans for the day and ask Him what you will need. Getting those first few minutes to chat with God puts the focus on Him.
Read a Psalm a Day
Or half a Psalm because some of them are long! But Psalms is such a beautiful book filled with inspiration, encouragement and a reminder of our humanity.
Reading a Psalm (morning is best) is a great reminder of who our Heavenly Father is and helps us put God first as we head into situations.
Check out my blog post A Psalm for Your Thoughts for more!
Why? Because it is fresh in our minds. We remember to praise God because we just read it. We remember to thank God because we just read it. We remember how powerful God is because we just read it!
If you want a great study journal on the book of Psalms, grab this one!

Prioritize God
This is a tough one, perhaps the toughest of them all.
As moms, we have a tendency to prioritize everyone but ourselves, and thus God is forgotten too.
It’s natural, if there is a screaming baby you will pick them up to soothe them. If your toddler poops, you clean them up before they start smearing it on the walls. If you kid is hungry you get them a snack before they turn into a hangry monster.
Moms meet everyone’s needs because they often are like flashing red lights in our face and need to be dealt with.
But God also should be a flashing red light in our faces, and we need to prioritize Him in our day. When our children are not in a state of disarray or teetering on the edge of imploding, it’s okay to say, “I need 10 minutes with God right now.”
It’s okay to leave the laundry or dishes for a few minutes while you seek God’s word. It’s okay to step aside and pray in a quiet place. It’s okay to put God first above everything that does not need immediate attention.
Listen to Christian Podcasts
Get some good podcasts in your library so you can tune in to encouragement and teaching while on the go. There are so many (check out my blog post of favourites) with so many topics so there will be a podcaster out there speaking to your motherhood moment!
Don’t forget to check out my podcast Busy Moms Christian Homes!
Listen to Worship Music
Worship music is wonderful because it has scripture woven through the lyrics. You can sing God’s promises as you go about your day!
Set Your Morning Alarm to a Christian Song
Make the alarm on your phone a Christian song! If I wake up to a song I typically will sing it all day long. So choose Christian music in the morning to put God first on your mind!
Get Scripture Cards for Around Your Home
I’ve said this before and I will say it again…get yourself some scripture cards for your space!
Put them in your kitchen window, on the fridge, beside your bed, in your bathroom…wherever you are going to see them and be reminded of God’s grace in every room of your home.
Check out these scripture cards for moms.
Putting God First is Essential
As I said before, I wish someone had told me some of these things in my early days of motherhood. I wish I had known what I know now.
That’s why I am passing it along to you! I want you to know that putting God first is essential in motherhood. All the anxiety you feel, the exhaustion, the frustration, it is eased when God is present in the moment.
So make God a priority. Love your children, care for them, spend time with your husband, take a shower and cut your nails but make sure God gets time every day too.
Put God first and fall into His grace so you can be the mama He made you to be!
