Anointing Your Home with Oil – Is It Necessary?

You know that anointing your home is important, but what about anointing your home with oil? Let’s dive into the scripture relevance and how to anoint your home if you decide to do it!

Praying over your home is important, there is no doubt about that. We should be praying over our spaces and the people who live there.

But what about anointing your home with oil? Is this biblical? And how should you do it? Let’s dive in.

Anointing Your Home with Oil – What the Bible Says

Anointing oil is used in the Bible, in fact there are many scripture references to it!

In the old testament, God instructs the Israelites to anoint the tabernacle (the holy space for God) with oil. In fact He provides very specific instructions about His space (read Exodus 40:9 – or the entire chapter of Exodus 40 for details).

Then we see oil again in the New Testament used as part of healing prayers for those who were sick. Read James 5:14 or Mark 6:13.

There are other times when oil is mentioned (Psalm 23:5, Luke 7:36-50) in the scriptures as being used to anoint.

Are We Required to Anoint with Oil?

The short answer is no, we are not required to anoint our homes with oil. It is not part of the commandments God sets out for us, so don’t panic if you aren’t doing it!

God gives us clear directions, His 10 commandments, Micah 6:8, the Fruits of the Spirit, 1 Thessalonians 5:17 and so forth. But anointing with oil is not among the “requirements” for Christian living.

Oil is used as a symbol of our faith in conjunction with prayer. In other words, it is prayer that has power, not the oil. Especially praying scriptures.

We can use oil to consecrate our spaces, as a statement professing God as the foundation of our homes but the oil itself holds no power.

Anointing Your Home with Oil – How To

If you decide to anoint your home with oil (which is a great way to consecrate your home and cover it in God’s protection) here are some ways to do it.

Start with any oil (cooking oil such as olive oil is fine!). Put it in a separate container, as a way of setting it apart and pray over the oil. Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom when praying over your home and that the oil will be a reminder of His presence in your space.

When you are ready to pray over your space, you can simply rub (or dab) the oil over the doorframes of your home. The entryway, bedrooms, kitchen…wherever you want to pray.

Pray as you go, thinking about the area you are praying over and the people who use those areas.

The Power is in the Prayer

Anointing your home with oil is just one way you can cover your space in prayer. It is a statement of faith, a declaration of God’s sovereignty in your home. It is by no means required but is a good practice to start in your home.

It is important to remember that the power does not lie in the oil itself. God holds all power, and it is prayer and faith that makes changes. Oil can be a powerful symbol when used with prayer and scripture.

Anoint your home, with prayer and oil and declare God’s peace in your space!
