Intercession Prayers Examples: How Mothers Can Intercede for Their Families

What are some intercession prayers examples? How can moms intercede for their families? If these are questions you are asking (or wondering about!) You are in the right place. Let’s dive in.

If you’re like me, a mom with littles, you’ve probably started to wonder about what you can do to help protect your children. We can’t bubble wrap them, and having little ducklings follow you around everywhere can make life tedious. So how do we keep them from getting hurt or getting into mischief?

As they get older we know they will start to spread their wings, which is both exciting to watch and terrifying. That instinct to provide, care and protect is a good instinct to have. In fact, one could say it is a spiritual calling.

God made you feel the need to protect them. The struggle comes when we don’t know how. As much as we want to smother them, we know that isn’t realistic. So what is the better option?

Intercession prayers!

What is Intercession? (Biblical Explanation)

The definition of intercession (or to intercede) means to stand in the gap, to pray on behalf of others.

We see this in the Bible in a number of places. Abraham interceding for Sodom (Genesis 18:22-33). Moses interceding for Israel (Exodus 32:11-14). Jesus as our ultimate intercessor (Hebrews 7:25). And the Holy Spirit who intercedes for us (Romans 8:26-27).

To pray on behalf of someone, to stand in between them and certain death or destruction, is what it means to intercede. We know the power of prayer, we know that God listens when we cry out to Him (read through Psalms, it is a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness).

So naturally as mothers we are intercessors. We stand between our children and the enemy, between our children and the world.

Sounds a little scary, when you try to picture yourself as the only thing standing between your family and the dangers of the world. Except, we don’t stand alone. We stand with God, because when we pray, our power isn’t in our human flesh but instead, in God.

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16)

Intercession Prayer Examples for Moms

As a mom, how do we intercede for our children and families?

Start by thinking about who you are praying about and what they need. What is the struggle they are currently having, where do they need protection?

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what you may not know or realize. Look for scriptures that correspond to what is going on. Then start praying. Here are some examples to get your started:

A. Interceding for Your Children

Example prayer for protection:

Dear Lord, I pray for the protection of my children. For their physical protection, that their feet would not slip, their hands would do your good works, that their words would speak truth and their hearts would remain pure. May you walk with them, cover them with your wings and keep them on the straight and narrow.

Verses referenced: Psalm 121, Ephesians 4:29, Psalm 91:4

Example prayer for their future/calling:

Heavenly Father I pray for the person my children will become. I pray that they can learn who they are, they you would reveal to them their gifts and all the wonderful things you have in store for them. May they walk in your truth and light and uncover the person you need them to be, to do your good works.

1 Peter 4:10-11

These are just two examples of prayers you can pray over your children. You know them best, you know who they are and what they need, you can make it more specific.

B. Interceding for Your Marriage

Example prayer for protection from division

Lord, we know a cord of 3 strands cannot be easily broken. I pray you would strengthen our marriage, that we would be a strong cord that cannot be broken. That we would be a team, we would stand together, inseparable in the face of darkness. Let there be no power that divides what you have brought together.

Scripture referenced: Ecclesiastes 4:12

C. Interceding for Your Home’s Atmosphere

Example prayer for peace:

Heavenly Father, you are the peace in the chaos, a peace that is unlike anything we can experience in our world. I pray for that peace in our space. That we would come together in harmony, that our interactions and conversations would build each other up and this home would be a place where we can rest and renew.

Scriptures referenced: John 14:27, Psalm 133:1

D. Interceding Room by Room

You can intercede for your family through the physical space of your home too. Think about the spaces they use and pray over those places to cover them in protection, peace or joy.
