From the moment you bring your child home, sleep will be one of the biggest issues you face. Every child struggles with sleep at some point in their life, some more than others others.
We know that sleep affects everything – your patience, your healthy, your ability to perform task…everything! But we also know that God instructs us to rest, just as He rested.
Telling this to your children and having them listen is another story entirely! So let’s dive into why sleep can be hard and the prayers for peaceful sleep you can be praying!

Why Children Struggle with Sleep (and How Prayer Helps)
Identifying the reason why your child isn’t sleeping will help you in praying. Obviously if they are a newborn or in the baby stages there are physiological reasons for being awake but even they can be prayed over for peaceful sleep!
As children grow it can be a simple issue of overstimulation causing them (and ourselves) to struggle with sleep. Busy days, screens, too much activity, it all can make nighttime less peaceful. Again, God called us to rest and this includes our children. The constant need to be moving and have our brains stimulated all day is not how God designed us.
There may be others things that keep them up at night. Fear and anxiety is a big one, the darkness can seem very large and nightmares often amplify the situation.
As they get older this anxiety turns into worry; school, friends, future and everything in between. The time when our minds should be resting is sometimes the time when it starts flashing old memories and creating new scenarios to think about.
The thing is, sometimes we lump these into the category of “growing up,” when in reality they are spiritual warfare. As adults we will experience this (yes even with sleep!) but our children can also be attacked, which is why it is so important we are interceding on their behalf.

Pray Always
The darkness may feel overwhelming but teaching our children that God is with us in all things is how they learn to overcome anxiety and fear. Pray with your children so they hear your words, open the passage in the Bible and show them where God says what you are praying.
My children take comfort in knowing God is with them, holding them while they sleep. They find strength in His angel armies that stand guard at night. There aren’t fairy tales we tell our children, this is real life stuff, given to us in God’s word.
