The 4 Most Important Biblical Truths to Build a Strong Christian Home

What are some biblical truths to build your home on? Here are the top 4.

One of the phrases I use over and over is to “build your home on a foundation of biblical truths.” And it sounds great when I say it, but without context it maybe is a little confusing.

What are some biblical truths we should be building our homes on?

Biblical Truths for Your Home

When I first became a mom I didn’t even think to create an outline of “biblical truths” that I wanted my home to be built on. As my children grew, I realized that having those foundations made a difference in my parenting.

These are the biblical truths I now use in my home to keep it grounded!

God Loves You Unconditionally

Your children’s first understanding of God’s love comes from YOU. The safe space you create is how they learn about unconditional love, that even if they disobey or make mistakes, you still love them.

This is the first glimpse at how God loves them. Building a Christian home means creating an atmosphere where love isn’t earned, it’s given freely.

Romans 5:8 says “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” If we unpack this verse we see that God showed us His love, while we were sinning. Meaning that in the action of walking away from Him, from disobeying Him, sinner against Him, He still sent Jesus.

God didn’t hesitate to love us, He never wavered in offering the everlasting love that would save our wretched souls. And this is what our children need. This same unwavering love from us as their parents.

Your Kids Need to See God’s Love Through You

  • Discipline with love, not anger – “I love you always, even when I don’t love your choices” or “I will always love you, but I don’t like the way you are behaving.”
  • Apologize when you mess up – Even moms make mistakes and that’s okay! I tell my kids to “own it” and we should do the same. Show them that God’s love covers our mistakes
  • Speak affirmation over your kids – It’s more than telling them, “I love you,” kids need to hear more than that. “Nothing you do will make me love you less or more—I just love you”
  • Model receiving God’s love – Let your kids see you rest in grace instead of striving for perfection.

Scripture to Pray Over Your Home:

  • 1 John 4:19 – “We love because He first loved us” (teach your kids to love from overflow)
  • Ephesians 3:17-19 – Pray that your children would grasp “how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ”

You Are Not Alone – God Is Always With You

The long days of motherhood can feel incredibly isolating. Being surrounded by little people who can’t carry on a conversation and need you for just about every task (not to mention the mental load of ensuring they have eaten, toileted and cleaned) is overwhelming.

The good news is, you aren’t alone. Your Heavenly Father is with you in the chaos. One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is assuring them that God is always with them too.

Building a Christian home means establishing God’s presence as the centre, not just on Sundays or before mealtimes but in everyday moments. When you sing songs of worship, talk about God’s grace and goodness He becomes part of the ordinary moments.

And this is the reminder we all need, if God is with us in the ordinary, He certainly will be with us in extraordinary, whether it’s pain, sadness, joy or fear.

How This Shapes Your Home:

  • Invite God into ordinary moments – “Let’s ask God to help us with this hard thing”
  • Pray over your kids throughout the day – Morning blessings, bedtime prayers, quick prayers before school
  • Teach them to recognize God’s presence – “Do you feel that peace? That’s God with us.”
  • Create reminders of His presence – Scripture on walls, worship music playing, family devotions

Scripture to Pray Over Your Home:

  • Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (pray this over your kids when they’re anxious)
  • Matthew 18:20 – “Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” (pray together as a family—God shows up!)

God is Present in All Parts of Motherhood

Christian homemaking can feel isolating. This biblical truth is so important for those days when your mental load feels crushing. God is IN the laundry room, He is WITH YOU in the carpool line, sitting WITH YOU on those sleepless nights.

Reach for Him in those moments.

And in the moments of joyful motherhood bliss, praise Him. Share these experiences with your children too, invite God’s presence into your daily routine and suddenly it won’t feel so lonely anymore!

God’s Word Is the Foundation of Your Home

Matthew 7:24 says “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” In other words, when we read God’s word and apply it to our lives, we are building on the foundation of truth.

Within your home, this means using the Bible as a point of reference. Use it in discipline, use it in celebrations, use it in frustration, use it for everything. The scriptures are there to inspire, instruct and direct us.

We may not always like what it says, sometimes it gives us hard truths but we know that God’s plans are good. He doesn’t want to lead us astray and it is better to follow a hard truth than a soft lie.

Building Your Home on the Rock

  • Have scripture around your home – Decor, scripture cards, Biblical truths, scattered throughout your space as reminders of who your home is built on
  • Let your kids see the Bible is LIVING and active in your life – Not gathering dust on a shelf, but open on the kitchen counter
  • Fill your children’s spaces with Christian resources – Have bookshelves filled with Christian story books for your children
  • Use scripture as a point of reference for parenting (Read: Scriptures for Defiant Behaviour)
  • Speak God’s Word over your family – When your child is anxious: “The Bible says God has not given us a spirit of fear” (2 Timothy 1:7)
  • Make decisions based on Scripture, not just what “feels right” – “What does God’s Word say about this?”

Scripture to Pray Over Your Home:

  • Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (pray this when you need direction)
  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (pray that Scripture would equip your family)
  • Hebrews 4:12 – “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword” (pray God’s Word would pierce hearts and bring transformation)

Prayer is Your Authority

I am including this as a Biblical truth to stand on because it is so incredibly important. We can’t do any of the above things without having a relationship with God, and that is what prayer helps with.

When we pray, we are opening our hearts up to God’s direction. We can seek comfort, peace, strength, endurance…whatever our weary souls need. But our prayers are more than supplications, where we ask for ourselves. Our prayers have authority.

Praying Over Your Home

  • Pray over every room – kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, laundry room, leave no corner without prayer!
  • Pray over every person and their relationships – those who live in your homes and the friendships they have outside of your home
  • Pray over the legacy of your home – the future of your home, the purpose of it, those who will come and go and how your home will welcome them.

Scriptures to Pray Over Your Home

  • Psalm 4:8 – “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (bedrooms)
  • Psalm 118:1 – “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” (kitchen or dining room)
  • Colossians 3:15 – “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.” (living room)

How These Truths Work Together to Build a Strong Christian Home

Love is the foundation, when your home is built on God’s unconditional love, you can model this for your children. When they feel that love, they learn how to love others with that same grace.

When God’s presence is in the atmosphere, it weaves in God as the centre of your home, not just a guest. He is a normal part of your day, someone to lean on, to share joys with and a very real presence in your life.

With God’s word as the anchor, when storms hit, your home stands firm because it is built on the rock of scripture.

Finally, prayer is what wraps everything together. It keeps you close to God, to feel his love and presence, and to anchor yourself so your home can feel that flowing through you!
