The Lord Will Fight for You – Unpacking Exodus 14:14

What does it mean to say or pray, “the Lord will fight for you, you need only be still?” Let’s unpack the verse from Exodus 14:14.

I love Exodus 14:14. It makes me sigh with relief when I know that God has things covered. There is more to this verse than just standing still and letting God fight out battles. So let’s unpack what it really means and how to use it.

Context of the Verse

It’s important to understand the context that the verse is written in. We can’t understand God’s word fully if we don’t know the story, the story of the Bible and the specific story the verse is pulled from.

Why is this important?

Because pulling verses individually and reading them without context leaves gaping holes in our understanding of what God is trying to convey.

So what is happening in Exodus 14? The Israelites have just left Egypt. Pharaoh finally let them go after hundreds of years of slavery. Oh joyous day!

Except that isn’t the end of God’s plan. He rescued them from Egypt but He still wanted to show Egypt His might, so He hardens Pharaohs heart again (Exodus 14:4).

Yes, God sent Pharaoh after the Israelites. His horses and army chase them down.

So now God’s people are stuck between a rock and a hard place – the Red Sea, the desert and Pharaoh’s army.

They start to panic and cry out to God, then to Moses. In fact, not only are they calling out to him, they start to get mad at him for walking into Egypt and saving them.

They’ve been free for a hot minute and already they want to go back to slavery.

Slavery Feels Good Until You Taste God

I want to pause here for a second. It’s one verse but it conveys so much about our bondage to sin. Slavery for the Hebrew people was all they knew. The idea of freedom seemed impossible and after they were freed, suddenly they were being pursued by the power who held them.

They knew that power, they had lived under it. Was it good? No, but it is what they were comfortable with.

And oh do we do the same. God frees us from the bondage of sin, and so often we turn around and wish we could go back to that place of comfort that we lived in. Sin felt easy, it felt safe, we knew what to expect there. It wasn’t good but sometimes that feels better than walking into the unknown.

Until we experience God’s power, His strength and His faithfulness.

Don’t Do Anything Without God

The Lord will fight for you

Moses says to the people “Do not be afraid (Exodus 14:13).” And he tells them why, “The Lord will fight for you (Exodus 14:14).”

God tells Moses to raise his staff and stretch out his hand to part the waters of the Red Sea.

The solution they needed, the path to freedom, right there in the middle of sea.

None of those Israelites could have predicted that. None of them could have done it of their own will or strength. God fought for them, He fulfilled His promise to them in the most amazing way.

Exodus 14:14 reminds us that we can’t do things alone.

The Lord Will Fight For You In Ways You Don’t Expect

The Lord will fight for you

They walked across to freedom. Then God closed the sea on the Egyptian army, unleashed His power on them and showed who He was (and is!)

The important thing to recognize here, is that if the Israelites had tried to fight their own battle, if they had run back to Egypt or fought Moses, God wouldn’t have been able to display His power to them. He didn’t just want to save His people, He wanted them to understand who He was and what He was capable of.

God will fight for us in ways we can’t possible understand. He promises to protect us, but only if we let Him. If it feels like sin is chasing us down, like the thing we are most terrified of might swallow us whole, we need to turn to God.

How to Use This Verse

The Lord will fight for you

I pray this verse over people and myself. But I always use it in the context it was intended. If God is fighting for you, that doesn’t mean waters are going to part all over the place. The Israelites faced fear and uncertainty, they faced an enemy whose heart was hardened towards them. They faced death.

So if we want God fighting for us, sometimes that means we have to face hard situations. We have to battle against those who would seek to destroy us, those who slander us, steal from us and want to get ahead. But we don’t face that battle alone, in fact it is better that we don’t pick up a sword at all.

Instead, we should turn to God. We should seek Him, seek His wisdom and let Him part the waters, wherever and however that may be.

This verse tells us to go against our human nature, the desire to fight or run away, the desire to turn back to what we think is easier. This verse tells us the Lord will fight for you when you are quiet enough to hear His voice.

So stop shouting and start listening. God is taking care of things, you just have to let Him.
