Trusting God in every situation is how we grow in faith. Not in the big miraculous signs, it is the small purposeful steps taken each and every day that lead to your Heavenly Father. This is how faith grows, in the high, the low and the buffalo.

High Low Buffalo

When my son comes home from school sometimes he is in a “funk” of sorts. He’s tired and hungry and a little grouchy. To get him comfortable and talking, I ask him to tell me a “high, low, buffalo.” Something good, something bad and something silly or not exciting.

He loves it. It’s a great way to get him talking about the day and to open up about anything that bothered him.

I think about this as a Christian, in our walk with God. We experience highs and lows, but also “buffalos,” where we have times or seasons that just exist. We have day-to-day tasks we complete that we don’t always think God cares about.

In fact, I would say we spend more time in the buffalo zone than anywhere else.

The really big highs and really low lows are few and far between. More often than not we simply are walking, maybe stumbling a little bit, but steadily growing in faith.

But these “buffalo” moments and days are actually the ones that matter the most. God is with us through each of them and even if they feel insignificant, this is probably where the most growth will happen.

Because there are “highs” everyday. There is good in everyday, because God is good. There also are going to be “lows” everyday, but even those are good because God is still good. The majority of our day is probably pretty non descript. The same things happen, we eat lunch at the same time, perform the same tasks (hello dishes and laundry!), talk to the same people and tuck in our little ones at the same time.

It is in these mundane tasks that we can truly see God.

Christian Motherhood

Christian motherhood is a time that can feel like a buffalo. Day after day, doing the same things, without a pay cheque or even a thank you. It isn’t necessarily a “high” or a “low,” it just is.

We do it with joyful hearts, or at least try to because we know this is heaven’s work. This is the task God set before us, even if some days it feels monotonous.

Trusting God is trusting the work He put before us, even if it’s vacuuming the same floors twice a day.

I’ve had moments when I want to escape, go for a drive alone. Or send my family for a drive so I can sit in the quiet of my home alone! These aren’t highs or lows, they just are times when I am tired. And in these moments, I always turn to God. Just as I turn to Him to praise Him or seek His comfort and wisdom.

Trusting God

This is where faith takes action. When we trust God in everything we do. It’s not when we are praising Him on the mountaintop or crying our hearts out to Him during the storm, those aren’t the faith building moments.

We build faith when we trust God through everything between those moments.

It’s the journey of trusting God that builds our hope in Him. Each and every little buffalo moment, that seems insignificant but to God they matter. They matter more than we realize.

Just like I care about every high, low and buffalo my son shares with me. It all matters.

Everything we do matters to God too. And when we do those seemingly insignificant tasks with our eyes on Jesus, they build a Christ-centred home and a family that learns to trust God too.

How I Use “High Low Buffalo” in My Home

I ask my son when he comes home from school what was his “high, low and buffalo.” We chat about it, then we do a quick prayer. We praise and thank God for the high, we ask for what we need in the low and then we acknowledge the buffalo!

It’s a fun way to talk about the day but also remember that God is with you wherever you go and whatever you do.

Faith is Built Day by Day

There have been miracles and signs to show God’s power and strength. Waters that were parted, cities raised to the ground, dead who were raised to life. These were moments that filled people with awe and wonder, they give us a glimpse at how powerful our Heavenly Father truly is.

These moments are the stepping stones for our faith. True faith comes by continuing to walk each day remembering these and thanking God for His provisions. We can’t see miraculous signs every day to be reminded of God’s goodness and grace. We have to walk through days of seemingly pointless tasks, because those are the days where faith is perfected.

Trusting God means putting your faith in Him in every waking moment. He doesn’t promise it to be easy but He does promise to be with us and if we look for His goodness, we will see everything He has to offer us.

And whether it is a high, low or buffalo, we can be thankful for it!
