Praying Psalms 91 – Strengthen Your Home with this Guided Scripture Prayer

Praying Psalms 91, whether over your home or your family is a wonderful way to create that “hedge of protection” over your loved ones. Let’s dive into a guided prayer for this Psalm.

Psalm 91 is a beautiful Psalm that reminds us who is protecting us. Much of the Psalm makes reference to physical protection, like a warrior in battle but we don’t have to fight in real battles to need God’s protection. We fight spiritual battles everyday and should be covering our home in prayer as a way to strengthen and protect our family.

The Psalm tells us that God’s angels hold us in their hands, and I tell my children His angels stand guard over their doors at night. This is a powerful image for our children, to know they are protected by God’s angels, that He is watching over them even while they sleep.

Praying scripture is powerful on it’s own but praying Psalms 91 is even more powerful.

Praying Psalms 91

Scripture from Psalm 91

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.

He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

You will not fear the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,

nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.

A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.

You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,

no harm will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.

For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;

they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

He will call on me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.

With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”

When Should I Be Praying Psalms 91?

Praying Psalms 91 doesn’t necessarily need to be done on a daily basis but keep as part of your regular routine. Whether it’s once a week or once a month, make this a prayer you say regularly.

Encourage your children to pray with you too. If they struggle with sleep or anxiety, be sure they know God’s angels are holding them in their hands.

What Else Can I Pray Over My Family?

I can’t express how important it is that you are praying over your home and your family. The enemy is sly and has found ways to slither into our lives through anxiety, wayward thoughts and ideas that appear on the screens we hold in front of our faces. As a mom (or a grandmother or auntie or friend), it is so important that we don’t stand back on the defensive but take action by praying over those we love.

Psalm 91 Prayer

This is an example of a prayer, from the entire passage of Psalm 91. Use it, change it as necessary but remember when praying, seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance in all things!

“Heavenly Father, I/we dwell in the shelter of the Most High and I/we rest in your shadow. You are our refuge and fortress, our God, in whom we trust.

You are faithful, you will save us from any calamity that comes our way. You cover us with your feathers and it is under these wings we find refuge.

I/we will not fear the anxiety of the night nor the frustrations of the day or the lurking darkness that only brings sickness, pain and heartache.

There may be those around us who fall ill or slip into the trap laid by the enemy, but we will not be touched because the Lord is our refuge and we have made the Most High our dwelling. Because of this we know no harm will come to us or our home. You have commanded your angels to guard our ways and we pray they would stand at our doors, holding our lives in their hands, preventing evil from entering our space.

We love you Lord and acknowledge your name, and for this we know you will rescue and protect us.

As we call out to you Lord, answer us. Be with us in our trouble. Satisfy us with your joy so we may rest in your peace and salvation.”
