Bible Journaling Ideas – Why I Write Scripture

We read the Bible, we sing the Bible, we pray the Bible, but have you written the Bible too? These are some Bible journaling ideas and a special plan to follow so you can be rooted in Him!

The month of May has been a season for change, at least in my life. Some of the most beautiful things have happened in this season, but also some of the hardest.

Something I started doing years ago was journaling during May. I love to write (as you are reading)! But digging into scripture with my pen connected me to the word in a way I didn’t expect. I’ve held this Bible journaling plan close to my heart but have decided it is time to share it with everyone!

The Purpose of Bible Journaling

There are many benefits to journaling the word. In fact there’s many benefits to journaling or simply writing things down.

We often remember things better when we write them down. You may find this when you write your grocery list, you don’t have to look at it once you’ve written it down because that extra action commits it to memory. The same can be true for scripture.

It also is a way to make sense of what the Bible is saying. God will speak to us through His word but it doesn’t always seem clear when we are just reading verses. Writing them down and journaling through them can help us see God’s plan more clearly.

And my favourite part about Bible journaling is prayer. I love to put my prayers down, written from scripture. This is when changes have happened in my life!

Here are some Bible journaling ideas for you, and a specific plan you can start with me this May as we dig into being rooted in Him.

Bibles Specific for Journaling

There are so many Bibles on the market that are designed specifically for journaling. They have additional space on the margins so you can write notes, which is the perfect way to start getting your thoughts onto paper as you read.

This is great for short notes, thoughts or related verses.

I use an NLT journaling Bible, available on Amazon. It is slowly becoming more and more colourful as I add my thoughts into it.

How to Journal in a Traditional Bible

I have a Bible from when I was a teenager and I was terrified to write in it. To me, it felt so wrong to mark up a book of any kind, especially a Bible. So I started writing thoughts and scriptures on pieces of paper or card stock and sticking them in my Bible.

The Bible is worn from years of use and travel, but those cards have stayed in place, marking scriptures from parts of my life that I can look back at.

Alternatively, sticky notes work great as well, or adding tabs to your Bible for places where you want to remember. This is good for more traditional Bibles that don’t have margin space or are smaller print size.

Bible Journaling Through Art

In my younger years when I had time to start and finish artwork I would draw scriptures in a special journal. You can do this in a Bible or a separate book as a way to remember God’s word.

Work your way through scripture by journaling in a medium that works for you. Words can take shape through art and help you remember scriptures!

Bible Journaling with a Journal

I also have a journal I keep with my Bible. It is more of a prayer journal but I always include a scripture that has spoken to me or that I am meditation on. Again, this journal has followed me through many adventures in my life and as I read through it I can see where God answered prayer.

This has been one of the most powerful scripture journaling I have ever done. When I pray scripture, mountains have moved and I can see that in my prayer journal.

Bible Journaling Plan

This is my scripture plan that I use for the month of May. Really you could do it any time of year but I find when I journal these verses during May, the beauty of God’s creation flows into my words because new life is so inspiring.

You can journal the Bible all year long, which is the benefit of having a Bible specific to journals, but sometimes it’s helpful to focus a month on it, as a way to put pen to paper and scripture to heart.

I encourage you to start this plan with me in May and see what your Heavenly Father is speaking to you!

How to Use the Plan

Rooted in Him” is a plan that reminds us who we are in Christ. It is like a road map that takes us on a journey through our identity in God and how we should live that out.

The best way to use this is to read each passage for the day and then write the scripture that spoke to you. Record your thoughts about it and how you see it lived out in your day. If you can, record your prayers so you can go back and record when God answered them!

This plan also makes reference to my devotional “Abiding in Christ,” which you can get here: Abiding in Christ Free Devotional.

Write Scripture

Read scripture, sing scripture, pray scripture and write scripture. Have a plan so you can put pen to paper and record what God puts on your heart. Let the Bible come alive through the words you have to say!
