It’s Christmas time and I’m always on the lookout for fun ways to share the Christmas story. I found just the thing this year. This snack is great for toddlers, kids and adults!
I love tactile, hands on activities. Especially if they involve food. It uses multiple senses which is helpful for kids to solidify ideas. And adults will enjoy the simplicity of the nativity story in the form of food.
The Story of Jesus’ Birth
I did this with E and he loved it. We talked about each item individually and ate them together. We had a good discussion, which involved a clarification that dinosaurs were not in the nativity scene (toddlers am I right?)
I’ve been reinforcing the nativity story this year. E (who is almost 3) is at an age where he understands and his memory is pretty good. He even picked out an odd-looking statue of Mary and Joseph at Walmart amongst all the Santa Clauses and knew who the people were. (Total mom win!)
So he did a decent job remembering what the items represented after we were done. Although his favourite was the marshmallows, he also liked the idea of the “cuddling” (swaddling) cloths for Jesus.

Nativity Trail Mix is perfect for little hands and hearts. It retells the story in a way they won’t forget!
As I said, this activity is good for any age or place. If I still taught Sunday school/Girls club I would do it with older kids. It also would be a fun family activity or for groups of people.
It’s so easy too, no mess and (next to) no prep time. The printables at the end give the description of each item.
What You Need for the Trail Mix
- Mini marshmallows
- Pretzels (knot shape)
- Hershey kisses (or other foil wrapped chocolate)
- Animal crackers/cookies
- M&M’s
- Almonds and/or raisins
- Life savers (I used the peppermint ones)
How you want to “make” the trail mix is up to you. If it’s a teaching moment, go through each item separately and discuss it. If you want to give it as a gift, mix it together and attach one of the printables to the container. Or put it out at a Christmas gathering with the printable for people to read.
Share this with someone to use in their Christmas traditions!

You also can change it up. I did almonds/raisins as E is a little young for almonds but he loves raisins. You also could do mini candy canes to represent shepherds!
This nativity snack is sure to bring a smile to your face, fill up your belly and help remind you about the wonderful nativity story! Share it around and spread the joy this Christmas season!
