And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

This is such a sweet Christmas song. I’ve been singing it all week and Baby B loves bouncing to the beat.

My favourite version of this song is done by “King and Country.” One year at Christmas my grade 3/4 class used this version for their concert. It was perfect for all the kids but especially the boys who really got into the drumming.

Of course the little drummer boy was not in the nativity story but his representation is the important part.

A boy wanted to give a gift to the new baby and all he had was a drum to play. An endearing idea. And it’s sweet to think Mary (a new mother) was willing to have a noisy drum played for her newborn baby.

I can picture my boys wanting to do something similar. Seeing that gifts were being given and wanting to offer something too.

But the wise men brought beautiful, expensive gifts. How could anyone match those?

That’s the wonderful thing, God didn’t make a baby registry for Jesus and expect us to buy big gifts. All he asks is that we give of ourselves. Whatever we can offer, talent or ability to honour him with.

A big part of Christmas is gifts but it doesn’t have to be tangible items that can be opened. We can gift our abilities too. Setting up Christmas displays for people to enjoy, donating food or paying for the person behind you in line.

However you have been blessed, share it with others so they can enjoy it too. The little drummer boy had a musical talent (we hope anyways) and shared it with Jesus. A heartfelt gift, which is the most precious gift of all.

So this holiday season look for ways you can give of your gifts. Hold the door for others. Give a stranger a compliment. Bake cookies for your neighbours. Or simply pray!

Remember it doesn’t have to be expensive. The poor drummer boy gave his gift of music. An inexpensive offering but it came from the heart, which is all that matters!
