Do your children as questions about why we celebrate Christmas? Answer their questions (and anyone else) with scripture!
Table of Contents
My four-year-old loves to ask questions. He is inquisitive and curious and I love it, but sometimes it catches me off guard!
It can be hard to come up with answers on the spot so I wanted to be ready for Christmas this year, armed with scriptures and answers to all His questions.
I like to be prepared (that’s why I have a devotional planner dedicated to Christmas)!

So I came up with this free resource you can download and use in your home to answer the questions before they come up! It’s “The 5 W’s of Christmas,” or the “who, what, where, when, why (and how)” questions people may ask.
Of course there are more than 5 questions that I’ve answered because some of them have multiple questions that can be asked. And children are good at having followup questions!
I’ve also included “how” (as in, “how did Mary get pregnant in the first place?”) but I’ve worded in such a way that it is kid-friendly. Use this at your discretion if your kids aren’t ready for this discussion yet!
Why Do We Celebrate Christmas?
The most important thing to remember is that Christmas is a holiday about love. Jesus came because God loved us enough to send Him. And we are supposed to share this love with those around us.
That’s why we spread joy, peace and hope at this time of year. The gifts we send, the decorations we put up, the baking we do should come from a place of love. We want to share this wonderful story with everyone, our families and friends and if we can, strangers too.

How To Use This Resource
Download, print and use this resource at your discretion. If you want to do a little mini-lesson with your children, perhaps including my Nativity Trail Mix with it, that would make for a fun activity!
Or use them throughout the month of December like advent readings. Put them on your fridge or hang them on your Christmas tree to remind your family why you celebrate the holiday.
Or simply have the cards handy for when your children come to you with questions! Refer back to the scripture cards, or better yet, open the Bible and read it straight from God’s word!
What’s Included
With each question there is a corresponding verse as well as small explanation.
What: What is the purpose of Christmas? What are we celebrating?
When: When was Jesus born?
Where: Where was Jesus born?
Who: Who came to see Jesus? Who did Jesus come for?
Why: Why do we give gifts at Christmas? Why did Jesus come?
How: How did Christmas happen? (aka, how did Mary get pregnant?)
Two additional colouring pages you can use!
