A Christian home is one where God is present. His peace fills the space and creates an inviting atmosphere for those who live there as well as guests who enter the dwelling.
As you grow your relationship with God, you strengthen the faith-fuelled foundation of your home. Promising your unwavering trust in He who is Mighty and creating a dwelling of worship is what establishes God’s love within your walls. Anointing your home is one of the ways you can intentionally focus on God and bring Him to the front of your home life.
But what does it mean to “anoint” your home? And how exactly do you do it?
Should Christians Anoint Their Home?
The short answer is yes. While we believe that Jesus is the anointed one and if you accept Him as your Lord and Saviour you are saved by His blood, that doesn’t mean you won’t be tempted by the evil one.
If we think of our homes as living, breathing spaces, then we know there can be unwanted things that enter the space and tarnish what we are building. If someone smoked in your home before living in it, you know how hard it can be to get the smell out of the walls.
Homes that are full of violence, yelling, pain or discomfort leave lasting memories on those who inhabit the walls. It is not easily forgotten and the impressions left can be felt for years.
The same is true with spiritually damaging items, thoughts or devices within your space. Over time they will seep into the nature of your being, and become part of who you are.
Anointing your home is one way of casting out anything that isn’t of God.
How to Anoint Your Home
Anointing your home simply means you are declaring that your physical space is for God. When you declare something in the name of God, believing whole-hearted in His promise, then you can trust it will happen (Mark 11:22-25).
Remove Anything That is a Stumbling Block
And because of this, your home shouldn’t have anything in it that wouldn’t please the Lord. Before anointing your home, spend time in prayer, asking God if there is anything that needs to be removed. This includes thoughts and ideas, as well as physical items like books, movies, games or other materials. Once you have removed these things, spend time walking through your home, anointing it.
Anoint Your Home with Prayer & Scripture
There are different ways of doing this but I typically focus on the door frames, praying scriptures over the room and casting out anything that doesn’t belong, all in the name of Jesus.
I used to do this while working as a teacher…praying scripture over the door frame of my classroom (I used to pray Psalm 34:14 specifically). I didn’t do anything special, I simply prayed the scripture as I entered in the morning and as I left in the evening.
Anointing your own home can be done with specific verses for each room. Start at the bottom of your house and work up, casting out anything that shouldn’t be there and praying the scriptures over each area.
For example:
“Lord I come before you, humble and broken, knowing that you are all powerful. You are my dwelling place and for this reason I know there is no plague or evil that can come near this home (Psalm 91:9-10). Cast out anything that is not pleasing to you, anything that does not glorify your name or is a stumbling block to this family.
You are forever the same, your love does not change and I pray for wisdom and grace to wash over this place, to shield those inside and fill us with joy.
In your name I pray, amen.”

Anointing Your Home in Other Ways
If you are renovating or moving in to a new space, you can physically write scripture on your walls and then paint over top.
Leave scripture cards around your home, in drawers, cabinets on top of high shelves. Places where you are likely to find them but not regularly.
Purchase a Bible specific for your home (or buy one for someone a housewarming gift) and underline all the verses that relate to God’s protection, His love and building a home on the rock. Use this Bible with your family for Bible studies or prayer time.

Anointing Your Home with Oil – Is It Necessary?
Oil is used throughout the Bible. James 5:14-15 instructed people to anoint the sick with oil, not because the oil had healing power but because of the prayer and faith of those using the oil. This is the key when using oil in your home, the faith of the person using it.
It isn’t the oil that protects your home, but God who protects your home. The physical shedding of Jesus’ blood is what creates the way everlasting for us and shields us from evil.
Oil is a symbol of offering our homes to God. It is an outward expression of our faith in God’s ability to provide our home with the solid foundation that we need to raise our families.
Don’t get caught up in thinking without oil your home is open to evil spirits or attacks from the enemy. It is the power of prayer and God’s strength that drives out demons. So if you haven’t done an oil anointing don’t panic. The Bible does not explicitly say your home must be anointed with oil to have God present in it.
The Bible does say you must follow the Lord Jesus Christ with unwavering belief. That is where your salvation lies. John 14:6, Romans 1:16, Ephesians 1:13-14 are just a few verses that explain this.
Having Jesus in your heart means having Jesus in your home.
Why Anointing Your Home is Important
Anointing your home casts out evil but is also puts your focus on God as the foundation of your space.
The reason for anointing your home is because of the focus it puts on God as the centre. When you think about the hurricane that happens when you move in, the boxes, the suitcases, the craziness, you can see why you need God’s peace present! Whether you anoint your home before you unpack or after things are more settled, it is a good way to remind yourself that your home is for God.
It also places the power of scripture within the walls that your family lives in. The life verses for your children, the verses for patience or perseverance. The verses that cast out evil and bring hope to the life you are building with your spouse and family.
Spend time this week anointing your home. If you’ve done it before go through again with your scriptures and prayer. Remind yourself (and your family) that your home is one of love, joy and peace because it is built on the rock which cannot be moved!
