Our homes can start to feel chaotic, especially when there are children running around. Wintertime can be especially bad, when you are stuck inside or your usual outdoor activities just aren’t usable. The phrase “my kids are bouncing off the walls,” has some truth to it when your kids start catapulting themselves off furniture and swinging from banisters.
And you know what? That chaos starts to seep into our souls. We feel weary, not from lack of sleep but from restlessness. From trying to keep the peace, hold onto the thread of patience we have left and love our very busy little people.
I know because I have been there. Even as an educator I felt this restlessness during the winter months, the lack of sunshine and cabin fever. It is part of our existence in the north.
But, we have a God who is good and provides peace in the chaos. So let’s dive into some prayers we can pray in those moments of utter chaos.

What the Bible Says About Chaos & Peace
Before we dive in, let’s take it back to the Bible and see what God’s word says about chaos.
God Specializes in Chaos
God has a lot of things He is good at, but one of the things He specializes in is bring order to chaos. It says in Genesis 1:2 “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
At first glance this sounds anything but chaotic, but if we look at scripture from different languages, we see in Hebrew this is: tohu wa-bohu, or a state of chaos. So God took a form of chaos and brought it together to create order.
If He can do this with the nothingness of the earth, he certainly can do it with your home!

Jesus Offers Peace in the Storm
One of my favourite stories is when Jesus speaks to the storm, saying “Peace, be still,” and it stops (Mark 4:39). At His words, peace becomes a reality.
One of my favourite verses is John 14:27, “My peace I give you…not as the world gives.”
It tells us that the peace of Jesus isn’t dependent on the situation. Raging storm, cranky toddlers…it doesn’t matter. He sweeps in and offers peace unlike anything we could every experience in this world.
We’re Invited to Cast Our Anxieties
Finally we are invited, yes God calls us to Him simply so we can lay our burdens down before Him. We are told this in 1 Peter 5:7, but we also are reminded that prayer, that conversation we have with God is a place to lay down our anxiety (Philippians 4:6-7).
So with that knowledge, let’s jump into some prayers for peace!
Prayers for Peace
When You’re at Your Breaking Point
A short prayer: “God, I can’t do this. I need you RIGHT NOW.“
Consider a “yahweh” prayer. Inhale “yah,” exhale “weh.” These are breath prayers, you can replace the “yahweh” with what you need. For example, inhale: “God, help me.” and exhale, “Give me peace.”
Simple, in the moment and that extra deep breath you need.
When the Kids Are Fighting (Again)
When tensions get high and that one toy no one has even thought of for weeks suddenly is the toy of the moment, sometimes you need a prayer for peace.
A short prayer: “Lord, bring peace to this moment. Help me respond with grace.“
And maybe this is a good time to bring Colossians 3:15 into the mix and sit down with your kids and get them to pray too.
“Lord, let peace rule in our hearts, in our home and in our interactions with one another!”
When Sickness Has Taken Over
What is it about winter and sickness? And as a mom it is stressful because there is only so much our two hands can do. Once you’ve exhausted your ability, leave the rest in God’s capable hands
A short prayer: “Jesus, You are the Healer. Bring health and rest to our home.“
One of the prayers I pray as I stagger back to my bedroom in the middle of the night is:
“God, I need rest so I can nurse my children during the day. Take them in your arms tonight, bring their little bodies peace so they can heal as they sleep. Let them feel your comforting presence surround them as a warm embrace so they know they are loved, they are safe and you are making them strong.”

When You Feel Like You’re Drowning
Been there. That feeling like you can’t keep your head above water, especially when I was a new mom or a mom with babies. It was suffocating and sometimes there was no time to take a break to catch my breath.
A short prayer: “God, I’m overwhelmed. Remind me You’re in control.“
And if you have a little more time, pray this from Psalm 46:1-3:
“God you are my refuge and strength. Even though I feel like I am treading water, like this moment is going to suffocate me, I will not fear because you are the strength I need. Give me the lifeline of love, of patience and of peace so I can take this day one step at a time, moment by moment.”
When Everyone’s Emotions Are Dysregulated
Emotional regulation is tough, especially for kids. It’s even more difficult when many people are dysregulated at the same time. It creates chaos, frustration and meltdowns.
God has power over that. He has peace He can bring, we just need to pray!
A short prayer: “Holy Spirit, fill this space. Replace chaos with Your presence.“
And for a longer prayer, maybe something you can say with your children:
“Lord thank you for making us into people with so many emotions. We pray that we could take a deep breath and slowly let out the [anger, frustration, sadness] of this moment and that you would replace it with peace. Let us sit together and enjoy one another’s presence, this family is a blessing and we are so thankful to be part of it.”

When Prayer Feels Impossible Because You’re Too Tired
Are you the kind of person who can’t speak coherently when you’re tired? I can’t string a sentence together, it’s terrible, but sometimes prayer is the last thing on my mind.
And yet, that’s okay. God will sit with us in silence too. Those quiet moments can be moments when we find the most comfort. Simply ask Him to be with you.
We also can simply cry “help.” That is a prayer too. God knows what you need before you ask, and He will carry you through whatever moment or situation you find yourself in.
And finally, when in doubt, ask the Holy Spirit. Let Him intercede for you, seek His wisdom and words in what to pray.
Praying for Peace
Your prayers for peace don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to know exactly what to say all the time. But when you practice turning to God in moments of chaos or frustration, you will find a change in your behaviour and likely the bahviour of those around you.
AS your attitude shifts, as your perspective shifts, there will be a calmness that settles on your soul. God’s peace sits with you when you ask Him to join in. And your family will feel this. It will bring them comfort and peace, and it teaches them how to behave in those moments of difficulty.
Say these prayers with your children. Teach them what to do when things get overwhelming. Instead of getting frustrated, pray. Give them the short and simple words to say so they can have prayers of peace too.
When your home is covered in prayer, the chaos doesn’t disappear—but the peace is REAL.
