Planting Seeds of Faith: 4 Spring Activities for Kids

Planting seeds of faith in your children can be as simple as taking your kids outside! Here are some ideas to teach them about God as the world opens up around them.

I love getting outside, especially in the spring when the world opens up! It is a wonderful reminder of God’s promise to be faithful to us. And what a wonderful time to teach our children the same things!

These are some simple ways you can plant seeds of faith in your children this spring.

Planting Seeds Of Faith – 4 Spring Activities

Seed Planting and the Parable of the Sower

Matthew 13

Planting seeds of faith by planting a real garden is a great way to explain Matthew 13. This planting seed Bible verse is a great start to your spring activities!

Read through this chapter first, be sure you have a good understanding of what Jesus was saying. Verses 19-23 give a good explanation and this is what you want your children to understand!

Then go out with some seeds and talk about where you should plant them.

Ask why you wouldn’t throw them on the driveway or walkway, why you wouldn’t leave them on the deck or porch. Talk about the birds and how they eat seeds, how a weedy patch wouldn’t allow the seeds to grow, a spot without enough sun wouldn’t give light and so on.

Then talk about the area where you have prepared your garden. Good soil, tilled and ready to receive seeds.

That is what we want our hearts to be like! Ready to receive God’s word so we can grow deep, strong roots.

Butterfly Life Cycle

2 Corinthians 5:17

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here!”

The butterfly life cycle is truly fascinating. The fact that something can go from a wiggly, awkward looking creature into a beautiful butterfly is a testament to God’s amazing creation.

There are plenty of books that talk about the butterfly cycle. You can read about it HERE too.

Explain to your children how we become a new creation when we accept Jesus into our hearts. We don’t change on the outside (like the caterpillar) but on the inside we become beautiful. Our hearts change and everyone can enjoy that beauty, just as we enjoy the beauty of a butterfly!

As you are out and about this year, look for caterpillars and talk about how God will make them new, how they will change and become something different. Just as He is changing our hearts!

Visit a butterfly conservatory and look at all the different kinds of butterflies and how amazing they are! Planting seeds of faith can happen almost anywhere, and if it is a family outing, everyone gets to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation!

Nature Walk

Psalm 19:1

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Spring is a wonderful time to get outside and look at God’s creation.

Even the simple dandelion can bring joy to children, especially if you can find a field of them.

Encourage your children to look at the sky, the clouds, the birds and how the sun (don’t look directly at it!) is warmer than during the winter.

Remind them that the Heavens declare the glory of God and to give thanks in this new season!

Washing Wool

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, let us settle the matter,”
    says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
    they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
    they shall be like wool.

If you can find real wool (at a local farm, market or craft shop), spend time washing it to make it look clean and new! Alternatively get a white cloth that you can wash.

Talk about how God makes things clean. When we accept Jesus into our hearts, all the things we do that would stain us (lie, disobey, covet etc) will be washed clean when we ask for forgiveness.

As you wash the wool or cloth, talk about the things we sometimes need to ask forgiveness for. Include your examples as a mom, I know I am guilty of being grumpy, yelling, being careless and so on. It’s good that your children hear you asking forgiveness too so they know how to do it.

Seeking forgiveness doesn’t have to be a long painful process. It just needs to be heartfelt.

Then God washes us clean because of Jesus death! This is a great activity to do following Easter.

How Are You Planting Seeds of Faith?

Planting seeds of faith doesn’t have to be complicated. Children remember the activities that you were involved in and when they see you acting out your faith, it gives them an example to follow.

These are some ways I have enjoyed sharing my faith with my kids, what are some activities you have done? Share them in the comments below or email me alyssa@littlebitoflavender.ca
