Wanting to make Valentine’s Day a little more fun this year? Why not start some traditions with your family that will make everyone feel loved!
Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! A funny “holiday,” if you want to call it a holiday. A random smattering of red and pink in the middle of the winter. But I like having something fun to do in the month of February so I don’t mind Valentine’s Day.
A little bit of decorating, a little bit of heart shaped desserts, a little bit of love! It’s fun for kids too, especially if you have some traditions to do. Things that remind kid’s how much they are loved and how they can show love to others!
(The perfect time to practice building a home of love!)
Why not start some new traditions this year? Here are five great traditions you can start with your family this year, with free printables!
5 Valentine’s Traditions You Can Start

1. I Love You Because…!
I did this last year with E. I cut out hearts and wrote reasons we love him on each one. Then, starting February 1, every night leading up to Valentine’s day I stuck one to his door. He still has them up (although they need to come down so we can do it again this year!)

To simplify things, I have a free printable for you! Included in the printable are hearts with pre-written words (enough for 14 days), blank templates for you to write your own and hearts with scripture verses. All you have to do is print and cut out the hearts you want to use! I recommend printing on coloured paper if you can.
Alternatively, you can hide these hearts around the house or “send” them to your children in an envelope. Be creative with how you want to share your love!

2. Kindness Bear
This is something else we did last year and E loved it. The kindness bear came out as a printed bear and every time E did something kind, he got to stick a heart onto the bear.
We had to talk about kind acts before we started. Things like tidying up without being asked, or listening and obeying the first time when told to do things. There were other obvious things, like offering hugs and kisses as well.
This year I will focus on kind acts of service, as my four-year is at the age where he can be helpful!
We also do it for the entire month of February, from start to finish.
The printable is available for you below 👇

3. I Love You From my Head to my Toes
This is a cute one for grandparents, aunts, uncles and close friends!
Take a string and measure your kids with it. Mark it at their height, then cut it with a little extra string. Poke a hole where indicated on the printed card and tie your string to it! Write your child’s name and year on the back, and if possible, measure them and include their height. Wrap up the string and send it to family as a Valentine’s card!
Don’t forget to make one for yourself to remember how big your kids were!

4. A Mailbox of Love
Get a small cardboard box (cereal boxes work well) and design a little mailbox! Cut a hole in the box that fits cards or envelopes and set it out. You’ll also want to cut a hole or “door” to get your mail out! We found a box that could open from the bottom so all I had to do was cut a mail slot in the top.
Then you can write little notes to your kids and put them inside. Get your kids to “check the mail” and see what they got! You also could put little treats inside if you want!
And if you have older children, get them to write notes to each other (or other family members) and mail them to each other!
A great family tradition to start!

5. Valentine’s Day “Memory” Game
Do you remember playing “Memory” as a kid? (No pun intended!) It’s a simple game that is good for young kids. I started playing it with E when he was three. It took him a while to catch on but once he did we enjoyed playing together.
Why not change it up and play a Valentine’s version? I have a printable right here for you! Just download, print (on card stock) and cut out your cards to play.
Alternatively, these printable cards could be used as Valentine’s or to send little notes to your child in their mailbox!
