Praying for love should be the first thing in our prayer journals. It should be what we desire most from God all the time!
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

It’s Valentine’s Day this week. A small holiday that reminds us to love! Of course, it has become very commercialized, like so much in our society. We buy chocolates or flowers, bake heart-shaped goodies and hand out cards. All good things but we often forget what it means to love.

Praying for love means clothing yourself with love above anything else!
I’ve spent time talking to my son about love. What we love about him, the people who love him and how we show our love.
It can be tricky for a toddler to understand the whole concept of love. When I ask him what he loves, he says “lunch” or “the door!” He does enjoy lunch and he has this fascination with doors right now, but he doesn’t love them.
Love is a deep emotion that can be complex.
Colossians 3:14 tells us to put on love, above anything else. Above patience, kindness, humility, forgiveness…love should be first. It is what we should have in our hearts at all times.
Praying for love should always come first!
Praying for Love
And yet how often do we pray for love? We ask for patience, forgiveness, for strength but do we ask God for love? I know it isn’t the first prayer request I have and yet it should be.
If love is so important, we should be asking for it daily. We should be putting it on every morning when we slip on our housecoat and slippers.
Because love conquers all.
Sometimes we say we love things. I love chocolate or I love coffee. Just like my toddler loves lunch. But love goes much deeper than those physical needs. Love is caring for someone through thick and thin. Love is hugging your snotty-nosed toddler after he’s just screamed and cried and pounded his fists on the floor because his brother looked at him wrong. Love is death on a cross.
Love Gives Life
Love is what allows us to be patient, humble, and kind. Love is what allows us to forgive. Love covers all of these things and that is why God wants us to wear it first.
If we are going to grow little love seeds in our homes to build spaces that are faith-filled, we need to be praying for love everyday!
So for this week of Valentine’s Day, I am going to ask for love. I want to look for ways that I can show love, to my family, my friends, and even our dog! I know sometimes I need a little extra love in my heart so I can spread it around.
I will encourage my toddler to show love this week too. We have been working on kindness (a form of love) but I want to encourage him to do more things out of love.
It’s too bad Valentine’s Day has become so much about chocolates and flowers. It is a wonderful opportunity to practice putting on love. Especially for kids. Taking time to love one another and find ways to show it!
I hope you also can put on love this week. Be sure it is on the top of your prayer requests and wear it proudly. Let the love God gives you spread to everyone!
