Wanting to teach your children about the wonderful story of the empty grave? Try this (yummy) and hands on Easter activity that is sure to delight and remind everyone about Jesus’ resurrection!

And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.
Matthew 28:2
I’m on an empty grave theme this year! Last week’s devotional was about the empty grave and here we are with another activity that is great for kids (and adults!)
I told my toddler we would make an “empty grave” while his brother napped. He went and told his dad that’s what we were doing, with no context and my husband was thoroughly confused (lol). Once he saw it he understood but at the moment he was a little concerned about my planned activity!
It was a fun way to explain this portion of the story to my toddler. The Easter story is much more complex than the Christmas story so it’s good to have activities that help explain it.
As we built our grave I talked about what Easter was and what happened. Then we “rolled” the stone away and saw it was empty because Jesus rose again. How exciting!

And then we ate it (of course). Nothing like a sweet treat to make fun memories and help reinforce the story!
Here is what you’ll need if you want to make one yourself!
Empty Grave Easter Activity

Materials
- Traditional Donuts (with a hole in the centre)
- Round cookies (smaller than your donut)
- Coconut flakes
- Green food colouring
Directions
- Start by cutting the bottom 1/3 of your donut off. Stand it in the middle of the plate.
- Put the coconut flakes in a plastic baggie, add two or three drops of food colouring, seal the baggie and mix. Once they are coated, sprinkle them on and around your donut.
- Take your cookie and separate it (if it is the sandwich kind). Place it in front of the grave.
- Talk about how the “stone” was rolled away and the grave was empty!
- Eat!
Notes:
- I used girls guide cookies (as that’s what I had in my cupboard) but any small to medium round cookies will work. You also could use round crackers if need be!
- For two “graves” I used 3 TBSP of coconut flakes
