A Christian home should be brimming with the joy of Christmas spirit around the holidays. But what does a Christmas home look like when you are trying to remember Jesus? Table of Contents
When I talk about building a Christian home or a Christian space, it’s more than just the physical or interior design of your dwelling. Your home is an extension of your heart, a place of rest where your family can find peace and security after a long day.
At Christmas time, we want to emphasize the birth of Jesus, the love, joy, peace and hope He brought and continues to bring to the world. We want our homes to exude that, to let the story we’ve heard a thousand times remind us why we rejoice during these days.

Christmas has become very commercialized, a holiday that makes money but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it. God sent Jesus and just as we celebrate birthdays, we should celebrate His birthday too!
Ways to Create a Christmas Home Filled With Jesus
Here are some ways to make Jesus front and centre in your home this holiday season, even while enjoying the traditional red and green of this holiday!
- Make Nativity Trail Mix – this is one of our favourite Christmas traditions. It helped my oldest learn about the nativity store and remember it because, well, food association!
- Have a birthday party for Jesus – keep it simple or go all out with balloons and cake! But spend time talking about how Christmas is Jesus’ birthday and how He loved us so much He wants everyone to enjoy it. We give gifts, sing songs and put up decorations for Him.
- Go for a drive to see Christmas lights – talk about how Jesus came to be the light of the world!
- Decorate with scripture verses related to Christmas – grab my favourites here!
- Have your kids help you make a playlist of their favourite Christian Christmas songs – and then play them!
- Start the tradition of “Names of Jesus Star Ornaments” – I haven’t done this but once my boys are older I hope to start this tradition!
- Watch “The Star” – a favourite film in my house.
- Read one scripture verse a day until Christmas
- Act out the Christmas story with your children – or use a kid-friendly nativity set to do the story together.
- Do a Nativity Christmas countdown with your kids
- Talk about the true meaning behind Santa (St. Nicholas) – check out my blog post “The Santa Dilemma” for more on this hot topic.
- Answer all the questions your children might have about Christmas – use my free download with scriptures and simple explanations.
- Remind your children about the meaning of gift giving – The idea of gifts came from the wise men, who brought gifts for Jesus. Now we use gifts to remind each other about how much we love them!
- Grab The Wonder of the Greatest Gift to use year after year – one of my favourite interactive advent books by Ann Voskamp
- Talk about how the candy cane represents Jesus
Enjoy the Peace of the Season!
A Christmas home can be full of decorations, a tree, wreaths, garland and so on. Or it can have a few small things here are there. What is important is that Jesus is the centre of the celebration.

This season is for Him. All our baking, decorating, singing and family time should tie back to his birth. That is the reason for our hope, love, peace and joy.
As you create a Christian Christmas home, I hope you remember those important details. Share your love for the nativity story with your children and fill your home with His light this year!
