When it comes to giving thanks, there are hundreds of verses in the Bible that we can use. It’s more than just saying “thank you,” it’s understanding the reason behind it and having a heart of gratitude. Here are 4 of my favourite scriptures that point to why we are giving thanks, not just for Thanksgiving but for every day of the year!
So often we read scriptures that tell us to give thanks…there are some really wonderful ones. But sometimes we need to dig a little deeper, to be reminded why we are giving thanks. That is where our heart of gratitude comes from!

You Should Be Giving Thanks Because…
Ephesians 2:8
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift from God.
Giving Thanks because we are saved by God’s grace
The biggest reason we should be giving thanks, the one that stares us in the face is because we have been saved by grace! Not by works or anything that we have purchased or done, we are given eternal life because of God’s love for us.
This is not something that could be put on a Christmas list or packaged up and sent away to a friend. This gift comes when we receive Jesus as our Lord and saviour. We have to understand the cost of it though. The price that was paid for us simply because we are loved by God.
It is His gift to us. Our hearts should be bursting with joy and gratitude because we can live free!

James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from above.
Giving thanks because every gift is from God.
It’s so simple and there are other verses that are more elaborate than this but we don’t always need wordy scripture to remind us why we should be giving thanks!
Every good and perfect gift is from God. The blessings of a child, the roof over your head, the family that sits down for Thanksgiving dinner, they are all good gifts God has given. He doesn’t promise that these gifts will come easily, but He promises that they will be worth it!
Psalm 27:1
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Giving thanks because we do not have to fear.
Is there any better reason to be thankful? Our Heavenly Father is the stronghold of our life! He is the reason we don’t need to be afraid.
Not only that, He is the light we need in dark times. To guide us, lead us and protect us. Whether in the valley of the shadow of death (Psalm 23:4) or walking in His goodness, God will be with us.
2 Corinthians 12:9
But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Giving thanks because we are not burdened by our weaknesses.
I don’t usually thank God for my areas of weakness (usually I am praying that God makes me stronger in those areas) and yet God doesn’t expect us to be perfect. It says here in 2 Corinthians that His grace is made perfect in weakness.
We can thank God for those difficulties we have because when we do that, we draw close to Him. We spend time in His presence being filled with His grace. As we get to know Him, we grow stronger, maybe not in the ways we expected but He will give us the desires of His heart which is worth more than a thousand rubies.
In All Things Give Thanks!
These four verses are simple but powerful reminders about why we should be giving thanks all year. We turn our hearts towards thankfulness during the season of Thanksgiving but it is more than just changing seasons that should make us grateful. We should strive for thanksgivings, even when it feels like our thankful hearts have exited stage right.
God’s grace, His protection, His gifts and His love will carry us through every situation we find ourselves in, good or bad and for this reason He is deserving of praise!
