We all know that spending time with God is good. Its more than good, it is an essential part of walking with God. You can’t have a relationship with someone if you don’t spend time with them!

The hard part is when life gets in the way. You have a job, a family, and personal commitments and you’re tired. You tell yourself you’ll sit with God tomorrow, or when things slow down and then you don’t.

The ironic thing is, that spending time with God is what gives us the strength and energy to do our daily tasks! It is what brings us patience, peace or endurance when we need it. And not just when we hit our breaking point, when we spend time with God every day we are fuelled before we run low.

But how do we find time to spend with God when we are busy?

Here are the three things that can help keep you on track and spending time with God everyday!

Be Intentional

Verse from Jeremiah 29:13

Choosing God means actively seeking Him. It means inviting Him to join you. God isn’t going to create a 25-hour day so you have an extra hour to spend with Him.

You have to be intentional with the time you have. There is time in your day, believe me. But you have to be intentional in using it.

It’s really a mindset shift. We have to focus our minds on our Lord and Saviour. We know that He is always with us but sometimes we get distracted and forget to ask Him to take the wheel for us.

Instead of praying over a situation, we Google it or post it in a Facebook group. Instead of putting worship music on we play our favourite random playlist of songs.

It’s simple changes in our daily lives that put the focus on God. But we have to be intentional about making these changes.

So yes, it might mean setting limits on your social media or TV watching. Switch to your Bible app or a Christian podcast instead. Making those small but intentional changes brings you one step closer to God and that time spent with Him is so worth it!

Be a Morning Person or a Night Owl

God doesn’t care what time of day it is. He just wants to meet with you. He wants to spend time with you, He is waiting for a quiet moment to speak to your heart.

If you are the kind of person who can get up early, do it! If you are more of a night owl, wind down with God. Either way, starting or ending your day is a good time to spend with God.

This is especially good for all you women out there with a family. Unless you are in the newborn/baby phase (when sleeping and showering is a luxury), plan to get up before your kids or sit with God after your kids have gone to bed.

But be intentional about choosing a time and stick to it!

Have a Plan

Sometimes we don’t know where to start and that’s why we don’t start at all. Or maybe you’ve decided you want to get up 15 minutes earlier to spend time with God and end up scrolling your phone with your coffee in hand. Oops.

So start with a plan, a guide, a bible study book, a prayer guide…something that gets you reading and praying. It doesn’t even need forethought or a purchase. Download a bible app on your phone and follow a free devotional from there! (Little Bit of Lavender has weekly devotionals you can read too!)

Or just read the book of Psalms. It can be a good way to begin drawing closer to God. Whatever you choose, sit down with it and get into the habit. Once you have a routine it will make it much easier to continue, even when you are busy.

Be intentional about setting a time and be ready to grow closer to God. Coffee, Bible, Bible journal, scripture cards…whatever you need!

How to Spend Time with God When You Are Beyond Busy

Okay, for those of you who are beyond busy (and please, don’t feel bad about it either), spending time with God is still possible. Newborn phase, baby + other kids in the house phase, work + kids + activities phase…whatever your life may look like, you still need God. The three above suggestions still apply. Be intentional, find a time that works and have a plan.

Regardless, when you’re busy it might mean being more creative and unconventional in spending time with God.

I’ve sat in God’s presence and had deep conversations with Him in the following places:

The shower

Driving in the car

Taking a walk

Making breakfast

These are all activities that involved my kids. God met me where I was, at the busiest point of my life. But it meant being intentional, inviting Him to join me during specific times and having that plan handy.

In the shower and the car, I pray. When taking a walk, I talk to my kids about God’s creation and/or pray for people we see. When making breakfast, I sing worship songs (The Blessing is my current favourite).

I intentionally find time and know what I want to do or say to be close to God.

Take a look at your own daily routines and intentionally invite God to join you in your activities.

Be Encouraged

Spending time with God is possible. And it will make a difference in your day when you do it. When you take small steps everyday, eventually they will become a habit and you will find yourself in His presence more regularly.

This will change your motherhood journey and every other activity you engage in because you will have connected with your Heavenly Father and found His plans for your life.

Draw close to God and he will draw close to you. He wants to spend time with you, to renew you, comfort you, fill you with joy and give you peace!

So be intentional, have time for God and be ready to enjoy His presence. It will renew, restore and strengthen you. It doesn’t matter how busy you are, you still can spend time with God!

Seek the LORD and his strength;
seek his presence continually!
