It’s time to take a minute, slow down and consider what it means to be loved by God’s unconditional love! How does this change our day? And where can we find scriptures on love? Let’s explore.
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
1 John 4:10
The Promise of Unconditional Love
God’s love is a covenant, a promise that He will protect us. God promises this in Isaiah, saying that “the mountains may depart but His steadfast love will not” (Isaiah 54:10). It’s something He promised to Noah, Moses and Daniel. The rainbow we see in the sky is the reminder of God’s love for us. It’s God’s promise to love us unconditionally.
We read about God’s faithfulness time and time again in the Old Testament. It’s God’s way of preparing us for the ultimate covenant that He was making with us.
This promise, this covenant that God made is what sent Jesus to earth to save us. We are born sinners and the price of sin is death. But, and oh we can be so thankful there is a but…because God so loved the world, He sent His only son to save the world from this death (John 3:16). That’s a pretty big promise to make and follow through with.
God sent us the ultimate gift.
What Does God’s Love Mean for Us?
But what does all of this mean for us? To be loved by an everlasting God? How does it affect our lives?
It means we have to accept this promise with open arms. We have to accept that we are sinners and that Jesus died for us because we are worthy of God’s grace.
This is the key. It isn’t enough to understand that God cares about us. We can’t be passive participants in this story.
We have to actively and whole-heartedly believe His promise.
God offers His love for free, no strings attached. This unconditional love is a gift. But like any gift, we have to accept it. It can’t sit unopened in the box on our kitchen counter. It can’t be stowed away in our basement and only come out with the Christmas decorations.
Choose God’s Promise
We have to choose to believe God’s promise everyday of our lives. We have to rely on it, more than anything else in our day.
This means drawing close to our Heavenly Father. It’s spending time with Him everyday, even when it is hard.
It also means knowing your Bible so you have verses to remind you about God’s love. He is our shelter, the strong tower we can run to for refuge. He sent Jesus as our saviour, to forgive our sins and allow us to live knowing we are free.
So choose God’s love everyday. When you wake in the morning, remind yourself that God has a purpose for you today. Tell your children about God’s faithfulness as they go about their activities. Find ways to share this love with those around you.
And before you go to bed, thank God for His unconditional love that he has given to us, all day, everyday!
Prayer
Thank you Lord for your covenant that you have made with us. You have given us life when we deserve death. Remind us of this promise everyday and help us to love those around us! Amen.
