In life, what is it that you are working for? A life for yourself or are you living for God’s goodness?

His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.’
Matthew 25:21
How often do you wonder “What’s the point of life? What am I working for?” There are so many options for jobs, hobbies and lifestyles, it is overwhelming deciding what we should be working for.
Should we strive for a career that we love? Vacations that are priceless? Houses with pictures of memories all over the walls?
These are personal choices. Necessities and luxuries that we choose to have. But are they worth working for?
What Are We Working For?
The answer is complex. God wants us to enjoy our lives on earth. He didn’t put us here to be miserable! He wants us to have families, build lives and enjoy the gifts he gives us.
But we also need to serve him. Our lives are not just about ourselves. We need to be faithful servants.
The word servant might conjure up ideas of Cinderella, dressed in rags and cleaning all day. That’s not how God sees it though. To be his servant is to serve him, not in a rough and dirty way but in a way that glorifies him. His service is a service of love.
This means helping others, teaching Biblical truths, being a good steward of our planet and serving God with our gifts!
At the end of our journey we want to hear “well done my good and faithful servant.” We want to spend our lives doing meaningful things that bring glory to God. We should take what he has given us and multiply it.
I’ve spent much of my life teaching or mentoring youth. Sunday school, girls clubs, youth groups, camps and public school are all places God has put me. Now as a mom I still serve by raising my own kids.
I don’t have any special talent or ability just a love for teaching kids. I was able to serve and did so as best I knew how. God granted me opportunities to learn and grow and I used that knowledge to help more kids. Now my kids benefit and one day will use their gifts to help others!
Everyone has abilities and skills they can share. Don’t feel discouraged if it seems like you don’t have anything to offer. God grows little gifts into big ones! Whether you greet people at church, mow your neighbours lawn or diligently pray for your country, consider your work as an opportunity to show God’s love.
Our work is for God, we are working for Him. We don’t know how He plans to use it so don’t bury your gifts in the sand. Be a good servant and let God multiply your gifts!
