Do you know a kid who loves to pick dandelions? Do you run out of hands to hold all the (beautiful) flowers handed to you? Put them to good use and make a dandelion lion!
My aunt sent me this idea and I have to say I loved it as soon as I saw it. It’s an easy activity that is perfect for my 3 year old.
We did this in our backyard (the weeds are crazy in our yard and unfortunately it’s near the bottom of the to do list right now). But E loves running around picking the flowers so it worked perfectly for this activity.
He would get a flower, run over to me and put it in a hole. Then we would look around and I would tell him where to go next. I’m not sure why that was part of the activity but he wanted me to tell him which (of the 1000) dandelions to pick next.

If you have a good handle on the weeds in your yard you also could do this while out on a walk or hike!
When we finish filling the holes we admire it for a while, take them out and do it again. My rule is that the flowers don’t come in the house, so we bring the lion back without his mane, but then we can do it again another day.
If your dandelions are in the fuzzy stage you can make a fuzzy lion (or maybe a lamb). Either way this will still work! Get creative. If you happen to find other wildflowers maybe your lion can have a crown. Or maybe you’re an artist and can make a unicorn face 😆
Anyways, it provides a place for all the lovely picked flowers kids like to grab.
The best part is that it’s easy to prep, requires no clean up and can be done outside. Total win for moms, aunts, grandmas or babysitters! So send your kids off on a dandelion hunt to keep them occupied for a while!

What You Need
- Cereal box (or something similar but sturdy)
- Scissors
- Hold puncher
- Black marker
- Dandelions
What You Do
- Trace a circle from your box and cut it out. The bigger it is the more dandelions you can fit!
- Punch holes around the outside of the circle. The holes should be about a thumb width apart.
- Draw a face on the lion.
- Head outside and let your kids pick dandelions. Be sure the flowers have a stem on them so they can be put in the punched holes.
- Have fun!

As a side note, this also would go well with the bible story “Daniel and the Lion’s Den” or even “Noah’s Ark” as an extension activity!
