Winter feels heavy. It’s long, it’s cold and sometimes it feels like it will last forever. Here are some winter prayers to help you seek God’s presence in the quiet of this season!
Table of Contents
Winter comes every year and yet somehow I never feel prepared. I always end up rushing around trying to find warmer mitts or boots, grabbing jackets from obscure places because it suddenly got cold.
The funny thing is we know winter is coming. Every year it is (more or less) the same. The season of dark, cold nights, settles on all of us. And yet, we are not alone.

What Winter Teaches Us About Prayer
I am reminded, in the cold and stillness, is that God is present, He is very present. In fact, I have felt His presence more so during the winter because I have needed His comfort and oh what wonderful comfort He offers.
Winter teaches us, that in the seasons of the year but also in the seasons of life, God is with us. Our winter prayers should be those that reach out to Him, that look for His peace and warmth, because sometimes that gives more strength than patience or endurance.
How to Pray Winter Prayers Over Your Home
Prayers for When Your Home Feels Dark
Winter is a wonderful time to fill your home with light, because it is dark outside! What a wonderful reminder that God is present in your space by lighting candles and saying a prayer to invite His light into your space.
When spirits are low, pray for hope, not hope within the situation but hope in God.
Pray Psalm 27:1 or John 8:12.

Prayers for Peace in the Chaos of Being Stuck Inside
I’m all for a cozy cup of tea while watching the snow gently fall outside. But let’s be real, when there are kids involved, sitting inside for long periods of time is less like a relaxing vacation and more like an experience at the monkey exhibit at the zoo.
When that cabin fever starts to set in, the sibling fights and tension take hold, pray for patience and grace. Your home may feel chaotic, but it doesn’t have to be. Pray for household peace. Pray Philippians 4:7.
Prayers for the Waiting Seasons
God is in the waiting. In fact so often when we are anticipating something, or waiting for an answer, if we draw close to God we find strength we didn’t know was there. This is the season for prayer, when things seem dormant, we can pray for change, for new life, for God to move in ways we never expected.
Pray Isaiah 40:31 or Jeremiah 29:11.
Prayers Over Your Physical Space in Winter
Do some winter prayers over your house this year too!
Pray over the entryway, that there would be warmth and welcome for everyone who comes in.
Pray over your living spaces, that there would be peace and rest for those who sit in those areas.
Pray over your kitchen, that the good food you make nourish body, mind and soul.
Create a sacred space, even when it is dark outside. Make the inside brim with light and warmth from the Heavenly Father!
Creating Sacred Spaces During the Winter Months

- Light candles while you pray (symbolic light in darkness)
- Play worship music to shift atmosphere
- Designate a “prayer corner” for yourself
- Put winter scripture verses and place them around your home
- Morning prayers with hot coffee as the sun rises (however late that is!)
