Why the Presence of God Matters in Your Home

The presence of God is an important part of your Christian home. You can’t claim to be leading a Biblical life if God isn’t part of it! Let’s explore just why His presence is so pivotal in your space (and how to invite Him into your home).

The reality of chaos in modern Christian homes with busy schedules, overwhelming mental to-do lists and messy spaces means that sometimes out home feels like more stress than sanctuary. We have a deep, soul aching desire for peace amidst the chaos and yet every time we think we’ve found it, a toy bin explodes.

The thing is, you don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home to experience God’s presence. He doesn’t look for the cleanest, most organized spaces. God wants to bring peace and comfort into chaos, His presence dwells in the midst of your real life.

I remember saying this prayer when my children were really little…”God be the peace in this chaos.” My youngest would be screaming, my oldest would be screaming and the only thing that was keeping me from breaking down was God’s strong hand on my shoulder.

He was with me in those chaotic moments, sometimes He carried me as I carried my children. He held our home together.

What Does “Presence of God” Really Mean?

The presence of God is with us everywhere we go!

Let’s back track a little bit and unpack what the presence of God really means.

God is omnipresent, which means His presence is everywhere, always (Psalm 139:7-10). He is there wherever we go and whatever we do, the difference is whether or not we are acknowledging Him.

There are many scriptures in the Bible that speak to God’s presence. Here are a few more:

  • “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
  • “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
  • “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)

God doesn’t wait for your home to be perfect before He shows up. He’s already present in the midst of the laundry piles, the sibling arguments and the overwhelming schedule. Our job isn’t to create His presence, but to recognize it.

Why the Presence of God Matters in Your Home

You probably already have a good idea about why God’s presence matters in your space, but let’s solidify what you know.

God brings peace into chaos. He is the Alpha and Omega, the constant reminder that what is going on around you isn’t going to overwhelm you.

When you cover your space in prayer and invite God into the day-to-day activities, your perspective changes from “I can’t do this” to “God is with me in this.” This makes your home a spiritual refuge for your family because instead of an exhausted mom, you are a mom parenting out of rest.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

There are things that won’t change. The mess won’t disappear, the kids will still bicker, schedules will still be busy…all those things don’t magically change. What does change is YOU.

Your perspective, your undercurrent, your cup is filled with God’s love and that makes you different. Maybe not on the outside, but on the inside, you start to become the Mom God designed you to be.

What Does God’s Presence Look Like in a Real Home?

Let’s redefine what the presence of God looks like. Sometimes I think people assume it’s a home where everyone sits in stiff chairs and reads the Bible all day. And while God does exist in the Bible, He is so much more than just that.

God’s presence is not:

  • Perfect quietness and order
  • Constant worship music and prayers (although playing worship music all day is not a bad thing!)
  • No conflict or struggles
  • Instagram-worthy spiritual moments (IG is heavily edited, God is real and raw and unchangeable)
  • A house that looks like a monastery (no stained glass in my home but God is definitely present!)

Instead, God’s presence is:

  • Peace in the midst of noise
  • Turning to God in moments of frustration
  • Teaching children to pray about everyday problems
  • Sensing God’s nearness in ordinary moments
  • Grace flowing through imperfect circumstances
  • A home where God’s name is spoken naturally, not just formally

What this looks like in real life:

  • Praying with your toddler when they’re scared of the dark
  • Asking God for patience when you’re at your wit’s end
  • Thanking God for small mercies during a hard day
  • Speaking scripture over your home when anxiety creeps in
  • Teaching kids to say “Help me, Jesus” when they’re struggling
  • Worship music playing in the background while making dinner
  • Spontaneous prayers of gratitude for everyday blessings

Obstacles That Block Our Awareness of God’s Presence

Why We Don’t Sense God in Our Homes:

  1. We’re Too Busy

Busyness is the great enemy of our Christian homes. God didn’t tell us to work 7 days a week. He Himself took a day of rest! When we live our lives at full speed, we don’t take this time to acknowledge God and His presence.

Our homes become places where we take a “pit stop,” instead of having a dwelling place where we spend time with God. Your home should be a place where you can slow down and feel God’s presence.

2. We’re Waiting for “Perfect”

If you’re like me, you might find yourself saying “I’ll wash those dishes, then sit down with my Bible,” or “I have to finish this load of laundry and then I’ll do prayer time.” I fall into this trap where it feels like things need to be perfect or the to-do list needs to be done before I can spend time with God.

This makes God our reward, rather that our strength.

Our homes will never be perfect and let’s be honest, the to-do list will never really finish! Instead we need to prioritize our time with God, or invite Him into the job we are doing.

3. We’re Not Asking

We can invite God into our daily jobs. Instead of saying “I’ll wash those dishes then sit down with my Bible,” we can pray while we do the dishes or put on a Biblical podcast or audiobook so we can hear God’s word.

God wants to be part of daily lives. He understands the basic jobs need to be done (we have to eat and we need clean clothes!) and He is willing to meet us where we are at.

4. Spiritual Warfare

We fight daily battles and sometimes we don’t realize who our enemy is. Spiritual warfare is real and it is set out to destroy homes. The enemy does not want God’s presence in your home because if God is there, he can’t be.

This is why we have to be vigilant and intentional about inviting God’s presence into our space. It also means wearing the Armor of God and teaching our children to do the same!

5. Unconfessed Sin or Bitterness

The things we harbour, sin, bitterness, anger, resentment, it can affect our relationship with God. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and saviour we accept that He washed us clean. This means we need to do daily cleanses, seeking forgives and asking God to help us in areas where we are weak.

Allowing those sins to fester creates a barrier between us and God. So open your heart up to Him and ask forgiveness from Him and any one else who needs it.

“If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” (Psalm 66:18)

How to Invite the Presence of God into Your Home

As we’ve established, God is already present with you in all circumstances. So when we “invite Him in,” what we are doing is consciously acknowledging Him as Lord over our hearts and our homes.

This active welcome brings Him to the forefront of our minds, as we go about chores and activities, we remember He is there and focus on Him instead of the chaos or frustrations in the day.

He becomes central to our home, like a family member who is always with us.

I talk about God in our home like He is my friend. My son even talks about Him or asks questions as if God is a regular person we see. We pray in the truck during traffic, we ask God for strength and healing when we are sick, we remind one another that God put us in this family for a reason and we are thankful for it.

God is real in our space, there is no doubt about His presence.

Practical Ways to Cultivate God’s Presence:

1. Start with Prayer

Start with a daily prayer when you wake up, even 30 seconds saying “God, fill this home with your presence today.”

2. Speak God’s Word Over Your Home

Take is one step further and pray scripture over your home. When we pray scripture, the spirit moves!

3. Create Rhythms of Acknowledgment

Morning mercies, supper time conversations or quick prayer before heading out the door. Make intentional rhythms so God becomes part of your day!

4. Worship as a Weapon

Your home is a place of worship. Bring that into your daily activities. Play worship music or sing it with your children. The scriptures are woven into those songs and you can use it as a prayer while you go about your day.

One of my favourite CD’s to help me feel closer to God is “All of My Days” by Ellie Holcomb. Find it on Amazon!

When You Don’t “Feel” God’s Presence

The truth is, feelings aren’t facts. God’s presence doesn’t depend on your emotions. He promised to never leave you or forsake you.

We can have dry seasons, or periods of time when God seems quiet. Don’t let these times make you feel abandoned.

It is often in the waiting that we find God’s comfort and strength. Let this be a time to draw close to Him and ask Him what you need during this season! Don’t fall back on feelings or emotions. Stay tethered to what you know is true: God’s word.

The Power of Praying Over Your Home

Prayer does’t change God, it changes you. And if you are praying over your home, it will change your space as well.

The spiritual atmosphere will shift, peace will replace chaos, your home will be protected from spiritual attack and God’s purposes will be established for your family.

More importantly, you will draw closer to God. You will see Him in every room, every activity and every conversation. This change is what makes the biggest impact.

When moms are close to God, their families are drawn closer to Him too!
