What does the Lord require of you? And no this isn’t a rhetorical question! This is something we should be asking of ourselves on a regular basis. Micah 6:8 tells us to walk humbly with our God, which gives us an interesting image of the relationship we should have with our Heavenly Father!

but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?
What does the Lord require of you?
This was a song we sang in the girls’ club I used to attend at my church. It was their theme verse, which I can still recite because of the song!
I got to thinking more about this verse and what we are “required” to do. Do justice, love with kindness and walk humbly with our God.
I always like the last bit of the verse; walk humbly with our God. It’s just a few words but it conveys so much meaning.
Walk Humbly
It tells us to walk with God, alongside Him. Not in front or behind but beside. Like a mother walks with her child, hand in hand down the street. When you are walking with your child they are not walking along to show off the fact they are with you, or that they have new boots on. They are walking with you and enjoying your presence, just as we should be doing with God.
Although, when you think about it, this doesn’t seem like something that should be required! We should want to walk with God, side by side. Conversing as we go about our day. It’s a lovely thought. So why is it instructed as a requirement?
Because it isn’t just walking with God, we also are instructed to walk humbly.
This is more difficult. We are prideful beings by nature, enjoying recognition for the works we do. But God asks us to walk without needing acknowledgement from people.
We shouldn’t be concerned with the way we walk but rather who we are walking with. In other words, we should be using our God-given talents for His purposes, not our own. We need to seek His approval, no one else’s.
Pride and Humility
Pride comes when we think we are good at something, and maybe we are good at it! But instead of using our good talent and focusing on God, we use it while focusing on others to see if they are watching. This is not humility.
Motherhood can be a time when we feel the need to be perfect and compare ourselves to other moms. This leads to pride when we see the things we are doing and instead of being grateful for God’s gifts we feel haughty because of the life we are leading.
That’s why we should walk with God. It’s easier to walk humbly when He is with us so we can keep our eyes on Him. He is a constant reminder that we need humility. He also is our source of satisfaction for a job well done.
The requirements God has for us are because he wants us to keep close to him. Close to His teachings, his encouragement and his love. When we follow Him, we live a life designed by Him, for us!
So walk humbly with God. Beside him, all day, every day. Let Him guide your thoughts and actions. Let Him be your source of recognition for all you do! He has so many talents and abilities for us and wonderful plans for how to use them. Let Him be your guide!
