Counting Your Blessings

Counting your blessings is more than making a numerical list of the good things God has done. It is praising Him for His faithfulness through the good and the bad!

Fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10

Do you count your blessings? I’m not talking about making a numerical list of all your blessings (although you could do that). I’m talking about reflecting on God’s gifts, His mercy, His grace, His strength and His promises!

It’s more than just a reflection, it’s also the opportunity to give thanks. Counting your blessings offers a time to praise God for his faithfulness. All the good things we have, experiences and people in our lives are worthy of thanksgiving.

I spent some time the other day thinking about all God has done in my life. I was driving home from an appointment, alone (a rare quiet moment for me) and as I drove, I thanked God.

The country roads were quiet and the fields were starting to show life after a weirdly warm but dreary winter and it reminded me of all the cross-country drives I’ve done in my life.

Many of those drives had destinations that were life-changing. New jobs, weddings, new houses and so on.

The thing is, I knew God had plans for me. All those cross-country drives happened at times in my life when there was uncertainty, except for the knowledge that God had it all in His hands.

If God had outlined those plans for me in a step-by-step guide seven years ago, I likely wouldn’t have wanted to follow His plan. There were good things but also painful and uncomfortable moments. But every little hiccup and trial had been planned by God and he proved to be faithful through it all!

That’s why it’s important to “take stock” or look back on our lives. We don’t always see the tiny miracles or great deeds God is doing when we are in the thick of things. We can’t see the forest through the trees.

When we take time to reflect we realize He had amazing things in store, even if it was hard to get there. It’s important to look back at these things, recognize them and praise God.

Even during the seasons of our lives when we don’t feel thankful, we can still look for the hope God has given us.

Take some time this week to look back on some of the amazing things in your life. Even in times of struggle, God had His hand on you and there is a thanksgiving that should be raised.

And with that comes the knowledge that God still has more in store for us! He has blessed us and will continue to do so. He will give us the strength we need, when we need it. So praise God and keep counting your blessings!
