I have two boys. I am a boy mom. Dump trucks and dirt, screwdrivers and hammers, weird noises and farts. Those are the things that fill my days now.
Did I want a girl? Of course. But I know that God gave me boys for a reason. If I’m being honest I wouldn’t know how to raise girls. I don’t know how to do hair, I don’t know how to do makeup, I’ve spent more time in boots and jeans than skirts and flip flops. In fact my legs probably will never recover from the lack of sunlight!
All this to say, God knew that I could handle boys. I’m the one coming up with the idea that the dinosaur toys like to fart on each other. I’m the one who makes all the truck and tractor sounds when we read a book. I’m the one who runs around outside collecting sticks with my toddler. Could I do girls? Yes. But God had two little boys who needed a mom like me.
And I am glad I can be their mom. I’m glad I know how to play with them. I’m glad I can sing silly songs with them. I’m glad we can pretend to fix the table, the fan and the crib. I’m glad I’m learning all the names of the construction vehicles. I also wish they made more TV shows or movies about combines, because I’m getting sick the same show over and over again!
I am a boy mom, plain and simple. I will never buy pink frilly clothes, but that’s okay because my favourite colour is actually blue (or purple, depending on the item). My walls will be dirty and possibly dented. I will sit in the stands at hockey or basketball or baseball or football or soccer games and cheer. I will wash sweaty shirts and find dirty socks at the bottom of gym bags. And I will enjoy all (or most) of it.
We don’t always get what we think we want because God gives us what we need. I need my boys, I couldn’t imagine life without them.
I thank God for the noisy, busy, messy, talkative toddler he gave me. I thank God for the healthy, smiley, growing like a weed baby he gave me. I thank God I’m a mom of boys.
And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
