Taking Time for God (As a Mom) – 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Do you struggle to take time to pray and read scripture? Is the day gone before you’ve even glanced at your bible? Do you read about women who take an hour every day to do bible study and wonder why they get 26 hours in a day instead of 24?

I understand completely. It’s not that you are avoiding bible study or praying, it’s that there isn’t time. You can’t wake up an hour earlier because you’ve already been up most of the night with the baby. You can’t do it before bed because you have to sleep when the baby sleeps.

And every minute in between is spent keeping the tiny humans alive.

God understands this. There are seasons in our lives when the physical needs of others have to be met and that’s all we have time for.

But, that doesn’t mean we can’t spend time with God. God doesn’t exist solely in our bible. He walks with us all day.

I talk with God continually. As the scripture says, pray without ceasing. Yep, that’s me. I don’t walk around with my eyes closed, murmuring to God, but I “chat” with him throughout the day.

I thank him for the sunshine and trees. I ask for strength and patience when I feel a toddler meltdown coming on. I ask for safety for my husband when he leaves for work. All day long I talk with God.

I do read my bible. More often it’s the bible app on my phone. Sometimes I challenge myself to read the app instead of going on social media. Sometimes it’s just a quick minute while I’m nursing the baby, but that’s a minute well spent.

I’m not at a place where I can spend a devoted amount of time doing a daily bible study. God knows this. He knows people need to eat. He knows toddlers need huge amounts of attention. He knows if you don’t do laundry today your husband will have to buy a clean shirt on the way to work. He knows motherhood is hard. And that’s okay.

It’s why I write weekly devotionals. I know women don’t have time for lengthy reading. Some days you go from one hurricane into another one without taking a breath. So you need something quick to think about during your week.

So I encourage you to talk to God, about everything. You may not be able to devote time to a daily bible study but don’t write it off as not possible to stay connected. Write down your favourite verses and put them on your fridge. Recite them as you push your kids on the swings. Read bible stories to your kids and remember all the amazing things God has done for you.

And pray continually.

God is listening and he’s smiling at the amazing job you’re doing in your house, at your job, at the grocery store…wherever you are. There will be a day when the little hands don’t need you as often and you will be able to sit for more than a hot minute to read and pray. Until that day comes, do what you can, when you can!
