He Makes All Things New – Encouragement for Your Day When Things Feel Messy

What does it mean when the Bible says “He makes all things new?” Let’s dive into God’s promise and what is means, especially on the messy days of life.

Sometimes I look around my home and smell the dog, the couch, see the cracker crumbs on the floor and toys sitting in the space where I once had adult decor. I wonder to myself “How has this become my normal?” How can He make all things new when everything is always such a mess?

I enjoy a clean house as much as anyone. I just prefer that I didn’t have to be the one to clean it. I am often plagued with spring fever, but not the kind that gets people cleaning and organizing. For me it is the desire to be outside, at one time I would have headed to the barn to see my horse, now, I simply want solitude so I can write in the beauty of the changing season.

Regardless, it is a desire for something new. A change in routine, a cleaner house, new wreath on the door, new smell in the house…we want something new.

The wonderful thing is, God promises that He will make all things new. Yes, we see this many times in the Bible, but it doesn’t mean new clothes or abilities appear every day.

Let’s explore what this means and how it can bring comfort in the messy days of life.

He Makes All Things New

Revelation 21:5 says it plainly “I am making everything new.” In fact, if you continue reading the verse it says to write this down because we can trust it is true.

Jesus wasn’t making this statement as a promise for warmer weather in the spring. He goes beyond that and promises that all things, every aspect of our lives will be made new.

And what does He mean by that? 2 Corinthians 5:17 explains further, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

We are created to be new once we give our lives to Christ. And this happens everyday. It isn’t solely on the day when you gave your life to Jesus, every morning we are made new when we choose to serve God.

This is told to us in Lamentations 3:22-23, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Every morning we have God’s mercies. We are made new each and every day, even if we feel like we are the same worn out person from the day before.

Jesus wouldn’t come so we could be made new once. He came to make something new that would last forever. And I love how Isaiah 43:19 puts is: “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

Where there once was nothing, something beautiful will spring forth. Jesus came to make our lives not only new but beautiful. What once was a wasteland, listless and directionless has a purpose.

Are All Things New When Nothing Seems to Have Changed?

I know what you are thinking, “I read these verses, and nothing has changed.” You still have to wash the same dishes, fold the same laundry and maybe drive to the same job. This doesn’t feel like the new life God promises.

But I challenge you to ask yourself this question: “If you had to put your faith in a changing God, would you be able to trust Him the same?”

Part of the faith we have is in God’s faithful love. He is unchanging, the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. When he says He makes all things new, He isn’t saying He is making all things different.

Therefore, we cannot expect changes. We will not suddenly become more capable, stronger, leaner, wiser. These are not the new things we are promised.

What we can expect is grace, forgiveness, peace and joy. These are the constants that God promises, when He says He makes all things new, He means we are renewed with these.

Can I Still Hope for Changes?

This has become a key phrase I tell myself over and over again.

“My hope is in the Lord, not the circumstances.”

God promises He will make all things new. He already has made us a new creation. Forgiven us when we don’t deserve it and provided everything we need to sustain us.

It is natural to want something different, to improve a skill or relationship, to change a wall colour or do renovations. And yes, of course we can do these things! They are part of the joy in living, having a life that we can improve and live to its fullest.

But our hope shouldn’t be in these earthly changes we try to make. We cannot say “things will be better when we get a bigger house or a better job.” Instead we need to put our hope in God’s fresh mercies everyday.

His promise of salvation, of peace and comfort, His everlasting love, this is where we should put our hope. These are the things he is making new, and when we rest our lives on that we will find joy!

Morning Mercies

I encourage you to spend time in God’s word in the morning. It is a good way to set yourself up for the day and find God’s plan. When your mind is fresh, seek God and His wisdom.

He makes all things new, and the morning is the time to thank Him for this. Then spend your day praising Him for His goodness. Let those songs of praise be the changes you want in your life.

On the days that feel messy and difficult remember His promises, you are a new creation, a stream in the wasteland, restored through his love. Write this on your heart, let it be your prayer and remember everyday He makes all things new!
