Kids in the Kitchen – Biblical Life Lessons Through Cooking

Getting your kids in the kitchen is an opportunity to teach them Biblical life lessons through cooking. Let’s dive into scriptures and activities you can use in your kitchen to teach your children how to make food and at the same time draw the biblical connections!

Kids in the Kitchen – Verses

Get your kids in the kitchen and teach some bible verses!

“She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.” (Proverbs 31:13)

Let’s dive in with the first scripture to use with your kids. Focus on the second half of this verse, “works with eager hands.” That’s what we want our children to do in the kitchen; be ready to work with eager hands! From kneading dough to mixing ingredients, it is their hands that will make the creations to eat.

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10)

Another scripture that speaks to not only our hands but our minds as well. We should dive into what we do with our entire body. Focusing our hands and minds into the task, to finish them. This includes washing dishes, wiping counters and cleaning everything up afterwards!

“Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people.” (Ephesians 6:7)

Remind your children that whatever they make or do in the kitchen should be done to serve the Lord. The food may be for friends and family, but every process should be in recognition of the gifts God has given us. This includes the messy jobs of cleaning up spills and putting things away where they belong, they do that because God calls us to be good stewards, even in the kitchen!

“But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” (Romans 8:25)

Cooking and baking can take time. A watched pot never boils (or so they say), dough takes time to rise and slow cooker meals are…slow! But this is an opportunity to teach patience. If we rush a recipe, it may not turn out. And if we hurry we might make a mistake. Haste makes waste!

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

The Bible is like a recipe. Created by an expert chef who knows what will work because He has more experience than anyone in the world. Our recipes are the same, trying to change or adjust things doesn’t always work out. It’s important to follow recipes closely to ensure we end up with the results we want.

Practical Kitchen Activities with Biblical Applications:

Bread Making (Patience & Following Directions):

This is a great activity to start with and talk about using our hands to create new things (kneading the dough) and then having patience as it rises!

You also can bring in John 6:35 and talk about how Jesus is the bread of life. Good things take time and Jesus sustains us spiritually like bread sustains us physically!

Cookies are a great baking activity (scooping, measuring, mixing) but then also good for donating or giving to someone! Make up some care packages for neighbours or friends and bring joy to more homes than just yours!

Soup Making (Community & Care):

Soup is another great cooking activity, especially for older children learning how to cut or slice foods. Make a pot of soup for a potluck or a family in need!

Garden-to-Table Cooking (Gratitude & God’s Provision):

Plant a garden and watch it grow!

When it’s time to harvest (or head to a farmer’s market if gardening isn’t a possibility), talk about God’s provision for us. He helps the plants grow, provides sunshine and rain, and gives us the tools and knowledge to nurture the plants. Then we use our hands to harvest and make our meals.

God is so good through the entire process!

Cooking in the Kitchen Teaches the Bible

God’s provisions, both in the food we eat and the hands who prepare it can be taught in the kitchen. Not only does it introduce them to life skills but is also offers an opportunity to connect and share your faith.

God’s word can be tangible in the activities we do and how we teach it. Use these examples as a way to explain to your children Biblical teachings with your kids in the kitchen!
