Sacred Supper Tables: Meaningful Christian Conversation Topics for Families

Mealtime is important, not just because you want to nourish your physical body but because it is an opportunity to connect with those in your household! Here are some Christian conversation topics to make your mealtime sacred and a chance to unwrap the things of the day together!

My kids love to talk. My son is an inquisitive mind and always full of questions. I find it helpful to get him to retell the events of the day, so he will remember what he did but also to unpack anything that was troublesome or difficult.

It also gives us a chance to thank God for the blessings of the day. This can be done before bed but sometimes having a family conversation that is animated makes the conversation livelier.

Here are some Christian conversation topics for families to get you started at your meal table

Christian Conversation Topics for Families

Start your conversation with a Bible verse. It can be the same as your morning mercy Bible verse, or the verse you are memorizing or it can be something different. If you want to centre your conversation around that verse, plan it ahead of time so you can answer any questions your children might have.

For Families with Young Children (Ages 3-8):

Ask simple questions of your young children. You may have to explain them a little bit or offer examples, but once they catch on they will be able to think of things to talk about!

Here are some ideas to get your started:

  • “God Sightings” – Where did you see God working today?
  • “Helper Hearts” – How did you help someone today? How did someone help you?
  • “Creation Celebration” – What’s your favorite thing God made? Why?
  • “Thank You, God” – What made you smile today?
  • “Prayer Requests for Kids” – Who (or what) can we pray for tonight?
  • “Kindness Count” – Did you show kindness today? How?

Share with a friend to give them some Christian conversation topics!

For Elementary Age (Ages 6-12):

These topics are bigger and may take longer to unpack so plan for only one or two questions.

  • “Character Questions” – What does it mean to be brave like David? Kind like Jesus?
  • “Problem Solving with Prayer” – What’s something hard that happened today? How can we pray about it?
  • “Bible Hero Spotlight” – What can we learn from [Moses/Esther/Paul] about our situation?
  • “Gratitude Details” – Name three specific things you’re grateful for (not just “everything”)
  • “Service Planning” – How can our family help someone this week? How can you help someone this week?
  • “Scripture Application” – How does today’s Bible verse apply to what happened at school?

For Mixed Ages/Whole Family:

And when you have children of all ages, consider Christian conversation topics that everyone can discuss or offer an answer to!

  • “Highs and Lows” – What was the best part of your day? What was challenging today?
  • “Answered Prayer Sharing” – How has God answered our family’s prayers lately? How has He answered your personal prayers?
  • “Memory Making” – What’s a favorite family memory that shows God’s goodness?
  • “Future Dreams” – How do you want to serve God when you grow up? How do you want to show God’s love to others when you grow up?
  • “Forgiveness Practice” – Is there anyone you need to forgive or ask forgiveness from? Did you offer forgiveness to anyone today?
  • “Worship Wednesday” – What’s your favorite worship song and why? For younger children ask what their favourite song is (“Jesus Loves Me,” “Deep & Wide,” “This Little Light of Mine” etc)

Make Conversations Natural

Start with one simple question rather than overwhelming with multiple topics. “Read the room” as some would say! Take a look around your table and see if there is something someone needs to unpack or talk about.

Let kids ask questions about God and faith – even hard ones. This is a good time to dive into deeper, harder topics. Be sure your Bible is handy so you can turn to scripture. And remember if you don’t know the answer, that’s okay! Sometimes we don’t know everything because only God knows.

Talk about God like He is an old friend. Share your own struggles and how prayer/scripture has helped you. When we bring God into the conversation like we would any other person it becomes easier to converse!

And remember to keep it light and loving – dinner should be enjoyable, not an interrogation! Let your Christian conversation topics be something that bring your family together.

If you want to do a Bible study at supper, I suggest “Big Questions for God” by Sandy Silverthorne. It will spark conversation but also answer some tough questions! Available on Amazon.
