Is Christmas a time for worship? Amid the lights, presents and nativity scene, does worship cross our minds? Or are we worshipping without even realizing it?
Table of Contents
We hear the word “worship” in reference to church more than anywhere else. A Sunday morning, a service, a specific time when we praise God.
When we think about worship the first image that likely comes to mind is a church service. The first twenty to thirty minutes that is spent in song, singing praise to God.
The thing is that worship goes deeper than that, which is why it is appropriate to talk about it at Christmas too!
What Does it Mean to Worship?
God is spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
John 4:24
To worship means to offer respect, admiration, love and obedience towards someone (obviously in this case we are talking about God).
When we refer to worship in church, it is just one way of praising God through song. But there are other ways we can worship during the week, or during the year.
Worship is when we actively seek God; seek to honour Him and love Him deeper.
You can spend time working through scriptures to help yourself and your family understand the deeper meaning of worship and how it applies to your daily life. But the most important thing to remember is that worship should come from within. It is heartfelt, genuine and true.
Worship for the sake of worshipping doesn’t honour God.

We should worship in spirit and in truth. We should seek the Holy Spirit to move us in ways that allow us to grow closer to God. It means being vulnerable, being honest and open to accepting the truth God has spoken to you, through His word.
Is Christmas a Time for Worship?
The questions remains whether or not Christmas is a time for worship, and if it is, how do we do it?
Christmas is a wonderful time for worship. It is a time when we read the story of Jesus birth and hopefully, additional verses that relate to it.
We spend time reflecting on what it means for us, the hope, peace, joy and love that it brings into our lives. And while we do all of these things, we should praise God!
Christmas is a time for worship, a time when we can focus on the gift that was given.

Ways to Worship at Christmas (Outside Church)
One of my favourite things to do at Christmas time is turn off all the lights in my home, except the light of the tree. I turn on my favourite Christian Christmas carols and read the Christmas story to myself. I try to find time to do this alone, after my boys have gone to bed so I won’t be interrupted.
In the darkness and calm I seek God’s peace. I let the Holy Spirit settle on my heart and fill me with God’s love.
While I may not be worshipping and making a joyful noise, I am spending time in admiration for what God gave us. I like to slow my mind and focus on God’s goodness during the busy season.
Other ways you can worship around Christmastime:
Sing Christmas songs at home
Set up the nativity together and discuss the importance of each member in the scene
Make nativity trail mix and talk about the story
Hand out packets of nativity trail mix to neighbours!
Sit down and read the Christmas story together in the light of the Christmas tree
Tell your children to seek ways that they can share God’s love with others this season
Let Your Christmas Be A Time for Worship
Christmas is a time for worship. In fact, Christmas is the perfect time for worship because we have the opportunity to share what we feel with others.
The important this is that we must feel it in our own hearts. We need to spend time focusing on the true meaning, so we can be filled with the holy spirit and thus share the good news with our family and friends.
The miracle of the first Christmas is more than wonderful, it is life-changing and when we reflect on that, we can worship God in spirit and truth!
