Do you set daily walking goals for yourself? 9000 steps a day, 10 000 steps a day? If you’ve ever tried you’ll know it is possible but if you work a job that requires you to sit much of the time, you will have to be conscious of taking steps to meet your goal! The same is true with our walk with God. We have to be conscious of the steps we are taking every day.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
James 4:8
I set walking goals for myself. I aim for around 9000 steps, and if I get 10 000 all the better. I’m busy, chasing my boys and puttering around the house so it isn’t hard for me to reach my goal. I do have to be conscious of it though.

Share this post with someone to help them get their 10 000 steps a day and walk with God!
I check my steps throughout the day and if I’m lagging behind, I get up and get moving.
It’s good for the mind and the body! Walking is one of those low-impact exercises that can be done by just about everyone.
But you know what else? We also can do 10 000 steps a day with God.
10 000 Steps a Day with God
Just as our daily walking helps our physical bodies, walking with God is what strengthens our spiritual lives too. The more we walk with God, aiming to spend the majority of our day with him, the closer we grow towards Him.
We have to strive to do it every day though. This isn’t a once-a-week activity. You don’t notice a change in your physical appearance after one or two days of exercise. The same goes with God.
You won’t notice a difference unless you are walking with Him everyday.
Practical Ways to Walk with Your Heavenly Father
Walking with God doesn’t mean you have to set up a specific time every day to “get your 10 000 steps.” You don’t have to go to the gym and work hard for an hour. This can be done from the moment you wake up until the moment you go to bed.
Every physical step you take in the day can be a step you take with God. Keep your focus on Him and ask that He strengthen you through every waking moment.
Here are some other ways you can grow close to God throughout the day:
- Take a walk and pray as you go
- Remember that God is with you in every chaotic moment
- Put scripture cards around your home
- Ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom
- Use planners or calendars that are Biblical based to remind you of God’s goodness
- Christian phone wallpapers will remind you of God’s goodness every time you look at your device
- Play worship music in the background and sing along
- Listen to Christian podcasts (like mine Busy Moms Christian Homes!)
- Talk about God with your children, use Bible stories as reference for behaviour and attitude
- Check your steps with God like you check the time
- Every time you put your shoes on, say a silent prayer of thanks for God’s love!
Our walk with God should be something as easy and natural as a walk around the block. When we are doing it every day, our spiritual lives become strengthened. Just as our physical bodies are strengthened by taking more steps, this is what we want to happen with God.
We know that exercising every once in a while is good but you won’t see those good physical changes happening if you don’t do it every day. Just as with God, spending time with Him only once in a while isn’t going to strengthen your walk with Him. It’s hard to understand His plans and directions if we are only walking with Him here and there. To get the big picture we need to be in step with Him every day.

Make an Exercise Routine with God
If it helps, set up a routine for the days when you are busy. Plan to have things that remind you to pray or seek God. Walking with Him means keeping Him close during your day, whether you are off to work or staying home with your kids!
For example:
Mornings with God
- Wake up and ask God for His plans for the day
- Do your quiet time Bible study
- Pray for your family’s physical nourishment and strength as you make breakfast
- Pick 5 physical things to thank God for during your morning
- Remember to smile because your joy comes from the Lord!
Afternoons with God
- Remind yourself that your strength comes from God as you feel the afternoon tiredness seep in
- Bring God into the conversation with your kids (talk about courage like David, faith like Noah, perseverance like Esther, remind your children about growing fruits of the spirit etc)
- Thank God for His creation as you play outside or drive to/from activities
- Pray a silent prayer for the person ahead of you in the grocery store or perform a small act of kindness to a stranger
Evenings with God
- As you give your little ones a bath, talk about the story of Jonah, Jesus calming the storm or casting the nets on the other side
- Read Bible studies or stories before bed
- Thank God for His provisions and reflect on areas you can improve on
- Pray a silent prayer over your husband as you go to bed
- Fall asleep in prayer, laying everything down before your Heavenly Father and seeking His peace as your family sleeps
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk with Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught abounding in thanksgiving.
Colossians 2:6-7
Make Your Plan, Do It Everyday
To walk with God means consciously focusing on Him during the day, everyday. It isn’t hard to take 10 000 steps in a 12 or 13 hour time period when you are reminded that you need to do it. Eventually it becomes like second nature and you will find your relationship with your Heavenly Father has grown.
Take the first steps today. Walk with God through every waking moment. Aim for those 10 000 steps a day with Him and let your Christian life flourish under His presence!
