Mommy goals, the things we hope to accomplish for ourselves and our children. While it’s good to set goals for our families, it’s important that what we want has been aligned with God’s plans first.

A popular topic in today’s society is mommy goals. I’ll be honest, I don’t know where the term mommy goal came from and I don’t usually have them because most days the only goal I have is to survive (lol). I’m also not a “goal setter” and prefer to work within the realm of planning.
But essentially they are the same thing. It is what we are hoping our end result will look like and how we will get there. Maybe not a step-by-step plan but an overall idea of how we will raise our children or the activities and strategies we will use to raise them.
The thing is, we need to make sure that our “Mommy Goals” are aligned with God’s plans because that is the only way we will know that we can be successful!
What Are God’s Plans?
It can be hard to discern God’s plans for our lives, especially as a mom when the days seem to go by so fast. Spending time alone with God to learn His purpose can feel like an impossibility.
So how do you find out what His plans are when you are constantly on the go? How do we know if this motherhood moment we are in will produce fruits that God wants?
This is the age-old question and I don’t have a good answer except to invite God into your motherhood journey. Focus your mind on Him during your day and ask that He guide your parenting because you may not have time to sit down and do a fully focused Bible study and that’s okay!
Here are some ways you can check to see if your Mommy goals are aligned with God’s plans and how to incorporate them into your everyday!

Use Your God-Given Gifts During Motherhood

Believe it or not, you have many talents that serve you during your time as a mom! Whether you have the ability to teach, to manage multiple children, the patience to deal with difficulties, or a beautiful voice! God has blessed you with many areas that will help you raise the children He gave you.
These gifts may differ from spiritual gifts (given by the Holy Spirit) but God has still blessed us with many talents that will help us raise our babies.
God may reveal more abilities to you as you journey through motherhood too. If you aren’t sure what these are, ask Him to make them apparent to you. He may have endurance or wisdom you did not know you had! Wonderful things that will help you raise your children for God’s plans and purposes.
Your mommy goals should be ones that use the gifts God has given you. Don’t focus your goals on things that may only frustrate you. God doesn’t intend motherhood to be an irritating and horrible experience. Sometimes we push too hard in one area and forget our children do not need one specific type of mom. They need the mom God has given them!
I always wanted a little girl, but God gave me boys. And as I raise them I see how God has blessed me with so many boy-mom gifts. I love being outside and exploring. I’m fantastic at making truck noises. I’m actually really good at building lego houses!
Simple things that have no monetary value except to enrich my boys with a mom who can raise them in the way they need. And that is the best gift God could have given me!
Ask the Holy Spirit to Intercede
In my blog post about changing your prayer life with one prayer I explained that we need to ask God for His direction before praying. In our own lives we can get caught up in praying for good things we think we need but forget that we need to align ourselves with God’s plans.
It is the same when we are praying about our children. Sometimes in the thick of things we see what we think our children need but we need to open our hearts to what God has in store for them. The things that frustrate us about our children may be the very resilience they need in God’s future endeavours.
We need to ask God to open our eyes to the strengths and weaknesses of our children so we can guide them.
This can include the activities we sign them up for, as well as the things we teach them in our homes. God has given them gifts and talents, it is our job as parents to help them cultivate these in a safe way.
Holy Spirit, help me see my children through God’s eyes so I may teach and instruct them in the way they should go with encouragement and love.
Remember this goes beyond the basic milestones our children *should* reach. These are the Christian characteristics we want to cultivate. The aptitudes our children have and areas they need us to help them in. Our mommy goals should be such that they encourage our children to grow in grace and wisdom through their gifts.
Pray Scripture Over Your Children
When my firstborn was a baby I prayed for scripture that I could pray over him. And when I became pregnant with my second, God put scripture (in the form of song) on my heart for him.

These are the scriptures I speak over them and remind them of. I do not have a full road map for their lives but I know the point they are at right now, those are the verses they need. And they likely are scriptures they will need for the rest of their lives.
I put these scriptures in my Bible, my kitchen window and on my bedside table to remind myself of the mom I am for them and who I want them to become.
The hopes and dreams I have for my boys come from the Bible. It doesn’t matter if they become pastors or engineers, I want them to grow in faith, wisdom and grace. I want them to be able to practice the fruits of the spirit and wear the armour of God.
And I continue to pray for scripture to give them. My “mommy goals” for them need to be aligned with scripture. I want my children to have a heart for God so every step they take is made on the path of righteousness.
Set Your Mommy Goals for God’s Plans
Being a mom can feel like your are figuring things out as you go. Learning on the fly and steering a boat without a set course. That’s okay. If we hand the steering over to God and let Him direct our path, we don’t have to worry about heading the wrong way or veering off course.
Always refer back to the Bible when in doubt. Recite scripture to yourself and your children to remind them of who it is you follow and that you want to have a heart for Jesus. Let the path of righteousness be where your feet walk day in and day out.
Keep those scripture cards in your kitchen window to remind yourself of who you are in the eyes of God. You role as mom is not just a thing you do, it is one of the most important things you will do! God’s plans for your children will be amazing.
Set your sights on what your Heavenly Father has planned for your children. Do not be swayed by what social media or outsiders say about raising your children. Do not be conformed by this world, but rather be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Romans 12:2). Let God’s will be the will for your children and be the plans for your mommy goals!
