3 Things A Godly Home Won’t Have – Growing a Christian Dwelling Space That Teaches God’s Love

Stop and look around your home. As you strive to build a Christian space for your family, have you thought about the things that shouldn’t be in a Godly home? Hopefully, you don’t see them within your walls but it is always good to take a minute and consider what doesn’t belong.

3 Things you won’t find in a godly home - growing a Christian dwelling space

Wait what? Don’t we always talk about the things we should see in a Christian home? Shouldn’t we keep a positive perspective on things? Well, yes, but sometimes we forget about the things that are hiding “under the rug” in our homes and we need to turn our focus to them so we can ask God to remove them. Or we have people who ask us if our house is boring because we are Christians and we can tell them that there are things we don’t have within our walls, which make it a great place to raise our families!

A Christian Home

I think sometimes people have an image in their head about Godly homes being this place where you sit in stiff-collared shirts on hard chairs and read the Bible all day. You aren’t allowed to watch TV, your children don’t make any noise and you’re always praying.

Maybe that’s not what people think but the world typically has an idea that if you are Christian you must be strict, boring or weird. And this means your home must be a place of…weird Christian practices.

The thing is, our homes should be like any other, except for a few key differences. There are things we don’t have in our homes because we have a Christ-centred dwelling. With God in our corner, our foundation for love and joy is built from the ground up. This means we don’t have room for things like perfection, guilt, fear and hate. These things can’t live amongst God’s forgiveness, love and peace!

Things You Won’t Find in a Godly Home

Human Perfection

The idea that we need to be perfect within our home or our lives is the first thing that Godly spaces do not exhibit. God does not expect perfection and we should not expect it in our Christian dwelling space either.

Ecclesiastes 7:20 says surely there is not a righteous man (or woman) on earth who does good and never sins. This is why Jesus came to earth! We need a saviour, and we need Him every single day to wash away our sins. We can’t expect human perfection because as humans we are going to have struggles that we have to face and days when we fall short.

With God’s love in our home then we don’t need to pretend like things are perfect. Our kitchen can be messy, our windows need cleaning and our children can scream because their brother took their toy. Those are normal things that do not need to be made perfect!

But when we spend time drawing close to God and living a life filled with His love, we are blessed with His grace. God is perfect and when we love Him, He is what completes us.

We alone cannot achieve perfection. It is only through God’s love that we can grow in grace.

God asks that instead of seeking perfection we seek Him. Through His love, we can conquer our human imperfections and grow in grace. So speak love to your family. Wake in the morning and go to bed at night with God’s love on your heart and let that be the perfection you strive for!

Build your home on God’s word. Let it be filled with His peace, joy and love.

Guilt

Drop that guilt at the door because it does not have a place in our homes! We are saved by Jesus’ blood if we have accepted God’s covenant. This means we do not need to feel guilty for the days when we are imperfect!

That mom guilt that creeps in, we can toss is out the window. We don’t have to worry about making mistakes or doing things wrong because if we are walking with God He will pick us up, forgive us and help us work through our weaknesses!

This is important to teach our children too. They should be taught that they do not need to feel guilty after doing something wrong. We raise them to tell the truth, even when it’s hard. We raise them to ask forgiveness, to recognize where they have gone wrong and to take steps toward God’s path of righteousness.

Building a foundation of trust is what allows us to not need guilt in our lives. When our children trust that they can come to you and receive fair repercussions for something, they are learning about the importance of honesty and forgiveness. Things that they will receive from their Heavenly Father!

Guilt has no place in our homes because we have an open and honest relationship with God. We know when we spend time in prayer, reflect on our areas of weakness and ask Him to forgive our sins, He will cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

He has redeemed us, called us by name and created us for His purpose. A Christ-centred dwelling does not have guilt within its walls. A Godly home walks in truth and knows that Jesus died so that we may live without the mark of guilt!

Hate (Towards People)

This is one common misconception about Christians. There are things in the Bible that we are told not to engage in. It is made very clear that we should not participate, encourage or engage in certain behaviours.

But nowhere in the Bible does it say we should hate or teach hate to our children. It says the opposite. 1 John 4:20 says that anyone who loves the Lord and hates his brother is a liar. We are to offer love and grace to those who are struggling.

To be clear, the Bible says we are to hate evil (Proverbs 8:13, and Psalm 97:10 are two examples). But there are multiple verses about loving your neighbour, your brother and your enemies (Matthew 5:44, Luke 6:27, 1 John 2:11). In other words, hate the sin but not the person.

When building a Christian dwelling we focus on spreading the good news of Jesus. He came to save us from our sins, it is not our place to judge or hate the people Jesus came to save!

This means that we should not find hate in a Godly home. It has no place because our home should be filled with love. There are things we turn our eyes away from so we can walk the path of righteousness but we do not hate people.

Building a Godly home

Christian Dwelling Means God is the Foundation

One of the beautiful ways to think of our homes is a place of worship rather than a place where we eat, sleep and play. With this in mind and the fact that God is a Father of perfect love, mercy and truth, we know there are things we won’t find within our walls.

Our homes should serve the Lord. With the words we say and the way we behave, we should always exhibit God’s love, forgiveness and peace. Even when we don’t think anyone is watching. When our children learn what shouldn’t be brought into their homes, they build their lives on God’s truths and His perfect love.

Our Godly homes should raise our children to know that they do not need to be perfect (and neither do you!), they do not need to feel guilty and they should not hate. When we teach our children about God’s perfect love we lay the foundation to raise a Biblical Christian dwelling place for our children!

Growing a Christian dwelling

It’s also important to note that when building a Godly home you need to set yourself up for success. This means growing in your biblical knowledge and preparing yourself for the day ahead.
