But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”
Matthew 14:30
It’s Halloween next week, a holiday that incorporates fear in many of the festivities. Haunted houses, scary costumes and horror films are all features at this time. Some people love these elements but I find them too far from biblical comfort to partake in.
The Bible tells us not to be afraid. It’s pretty clear on that. Not because there aren’t things to be afraid of but because we have God on our side.
When Peter stepped out of the boat to walk towards Jesus, he went a few steps before fear overtook him. He literally took his eyes off Jesus and started sinking.
That’s where fear creeps in when we take our eyes off God. When we allow ourselves to be distracted by worldly things or become consumed by worry and insecurity. Instead, we should be focusing on God. We need to have faith that he will guide us through the storm.
It’s, for this reason, I avoid most parts of Halloween. I don’t enjoy scary things, to begin with, so why would I distract myself further from Christ?
We still dress up and go trick or treating because that element is fun for kids. It’s also a good opportunity to meet the neighbours and make memories as a family.
But I don’t decorate with anything except pumpkins. We don’t do witches and ghosts and gory things. We dress up as fun characters and focus on the “thank you” part of getting candy.
Because fear has no place in my life and I will not bring it into my home.
Sometimes I wonder if it’s too harsh, but when I reread the story of Peter, I know what happens when we get distracted. If we bring fear into our lives we risk sinking. It is faith that overcomes fear and we have to keep our focus on God.
So do not be afraid! Yes, there are plenty of things around us that warrant fear but if we keep our eyes on God, he will walk us through them. He is bigger than the wind and waves.
Keep your focus on God this week. Through the small and big hurdles, he will be there. Don’t hesitate to call out to him when you feel overwhelmed. And fear not because he will reach out his hand when you need it!
