So often we think of pouring out our praise as something you do in a church service. It can be more than that. When we praise others we share God’s love in the words we say!

When I got pregnant with our second, I started singing the song “Great Are You Lord” by All Sons and Daughters (to hear the song, click the link). It was out of the blue and I knew God had put the song on my heart. I sang the verse “It’s your breath in our lungs, so we pour out our praise,” over and over and over. Somehow it was comforting in the uncertain times during the pregnancy.
Well God sure has a sense of humour because that kid was born with a wonderful set of lungs. He used those lungs to scream and cry as loud as he could at any inconvenience. I told baby B one day he would use his lung capacity to praise God and he was just practicing right now.
Pouring Out Our Praise
But it got me thinking about how we praise God. And not just in song, but praising God with the words we speak. Do we use the breath in our lungs to lift others up so they hear God through us? Is our language kind and encouraging? Or do we grumble and complain?
Especially as moms, when we talk to our children or our spouse, are we building them up? Are we giving them words of inspiration and encouragement?
Some days it’s easier to nit pick or be “sassy” (as my husband says) towards those around us. We feel tired and run down and would rather be snarky than patient. But our words can be hurtful if we aren’t careful.
God asks us to glorify Him and not just with praise and worship songs. We need to show our Christ like heart in what we say. Praise Him with the words we speak.
Going out of our way to tell our spouse how much we love them. Taking time to tell our children how much they mean to us. Telling a teacher, cashier, waitress, boss, coworker…that they are doing a great job.
Pouring out our praise towards those around us is a simple way of expressing our love for God. Simple things that come from a Christ centred heart. Not because we want something in return but because we want people to feel loved as God loves us.
These words of praise will have a positive impact on our home. The love it shows our family creates a space of peace and builds a strong Christian home. When our children go to bed at night with praise in their hearts, they sleep knowing they are a child of God who will always be welcome in His presence.
So I encourage you this week, if you feel the breath in your lungs is going to be negative, find something good to say. Use it to pour out your praise, whether in an actual song or in what you say to someone. Let the praise fill your home and your family, let it be the melody of your daily activities and fill your soul!
